  • hi, being new to a fixed gear and riding brakeless, when I stop quickly it feels like something is slipping, also when I accelerate quickly it's only a tiny slip but it's a little un-nerving seeing as this is my only way of slowing down. Has anyone else had this problem or have any ideas what it might be or how to fix it? thanks

  • sounds like your rear cog is slipping, is the lockring on tight???

  • you also might wanna use a brake if you are new to both fixed and brakeless.

  • yeah my brakes haven't turned up yet and i'm impatient.
i'll go check my ring now....

  • Be very careful with that.
~~Check to see that the lockring is tight. It might be loose. Or else you might strip your hub out and hurt yourself.
Also the obvious. That your bolts are properly tightened. ~~
    *someone beat me to it.

And you can also slow down by foot braking.
Or get a brake if you're not skilled enough to ride brakeless. This option comes highly recommended. It beats getting yourself into an accident.

  • Or get a brake if you're not skilled enough to ride brakeless.

That annoys me. Any muppet can ride sans-brakes. To do it and not suffer injury (or inflict, eh Mr. 50:14) is what counts.

OP: As others say it's probably a loose cog and lock ring (you do have a lockring on right?). Put your bike away and wait for the brakes to turn up or at least take it very fscking easy.

  • i'm quite comfortable riding brakeless but i'll be running a front brake as of tomorrow. i just checked my lockring, finger tight can be the only way to describe it, should of checked it really. thanks for the help guys..

  • finger tight???? it needs to be fucking tight!!!
make sure there is NO movement..........or there will be tears.

  • Make sure your cog is tight BEFORE you tighten the lockring too..

  • well i say tight, loose would be a better word..

  • !!!

  • i had that same slipping, it probably had somthing to do with the lockring and the rear cog being loose, so i rotafixed the cog on really tight without stripping the thread and now everthing seems fine. but id wait for the brake, unless your real badass!

  • and slack is your user name?????

  • Can you let me know the routes you intend to take before your brake turns up?

Just so I know to avoid someone new to fixed wheel, who is riding brakeless - with bits falling off his bike cos they ain't tight enough.

  • i've got a chain whip so i can tighten the sprocket no problem, do you think every lbs will have a lock ring tool? because i don't have one.

  • Do you have a hammer and a flathead screwdriver or a chisel?

Also, check out the rotafix method. Tighter than chaintool will get.
I generally go outside with the lockring done up and ride my bike up a hill, some hill-sprints to tighten the cog down (no leg braking!) and then go back home and tighten the lockring.

  • Are you sure you haven't got a lock ring tool? Quite often they are built into other tools. Mine is on the other end of a 32 mm headset spanner. Do you know what one looks like?

  • yeah i know what a lock ring spanner looks like......

  • i've got a spare Shimano chain whip with lock ring spanner. Bought last week for £25 and used only once. I've splashed out on the Wiggle toolkit so now have a spare. Let me know if you're interested...

  • i think i'm gonna do rotafix then hammer and screw driver.. thanks hippy!

  • hippy Or get a brake if you're not skilled enough to ride brakeless.

True. But ya gotta start somewhere, and safely at the same time, no?

  • Yeah, I've recently been on a ride where brakeless newbie ended ride in ambulance (taking out some others too).
I'm not about to get into brakes vs. brakeless debate, but for newbies I certainly do advocate the use of brakes!
To me, "if you're not skilled enough to ride brakeless" made it sound like brakeless was some kind of higher ability level.. and whether it is or not I just don't like even mentioning brakeless riding to new fixers, especially after 50:14's crash. Sorry, personal beef against brakeless newbs I guess..

  • Very tactfully put Hippy.

  • hippy Do you have a hammer and a flathead screwdriver or a chisel?

Good idea, is this as good as the rotafix method ?
