  • I've 'interrupted' my degree (probably permanently) and have a job interview on Friday. If I'm the successful applicant, it would mean walking to work.

I'm worried it could lead to a downward trend in my mental health... unless I get up early and throw in a few laps of Regents Park Outer Circle, or a token ascent of a North London col :S

Does anyone on here NOT commute by bicycle to work/college?

  • I am not cyclng to work at the moment - it is a 10 minute walk. I really miss the cycle to work and back - I find myself using any excuse to get on my bike. Thankfully it is only a temporary placement...

  • A ten minute walk is a two minute ride - or a ten minute ride if you go the long way...

  • move, it's the only solution.

  • Sano A ten minute walk is a two minute ride - or a ten minute ride if you go the long way...

Going the 'long way round' in EC1/N1 is not a very attractive proposition. I could probably get home at lunchtime and do 20 mins on the turbo... ;(

  • My 10 minute cycle on the way home takes me 40 minutes because I like to spin through town on the way home, dodge through traffic and work up my appetite for dinner. Anyone else do the same? My girlfriend thinks I'm a weirdo

  • I take a very direct route to work, but a circuitous route home - although that's mostly to avoid climbing a hill that's been known to make grown men weep.

I work around 3 metres from where I sleep !

    :)

    Fair enough - turbo's just a bit weird, though... ; )

I work in EC1, too... Not the most interesting ride... That and the chance of getting stabbed up by yoot on the way home... ha

  • I do everything from 12 miles each way to a two minute walk depending on where we're working.

it's usually nearby though, which is why I'm such an unfit cyclist

  • turpe a hill that's been known to make grown men weep.

Where's that then? I'm not afraid to cry :*p

    No, really.

Fun on the way down but, on the way up - not so much, as Borat might put it.

  • TheBrick(Tommy) move, it's the only solution.

    Definitely.

Very few I imagine! In the first 4 weeks of uni I was getting the tube, and I felt like I was slowly going crazy. I wasn't sleeping well either but I think that's down to just not exercising rather than cycling as an activity specifically.

Definintely more fun to me on the way up (though downhill would be okay if I was guaranteed a clear run at each intersection!).

Never happens on California. Two blocks across to the right is Bush, though - a little less steep, but with timed traffic lights, so you can make it from top to bottom at Mach 2.6.

However, you always have to take into consideration the fact that Americans can't drive.

  • Just cycle anyway! Quite simple really.. I could get to college in 20 minutes every day walking but I choose to get there in 5 by cycling.

  • I'm not riding to work at the moment as a blind twat in a wheeled coffin pulled out on me two weeks ago.
    "Sorry mate, didn't see you"
Brand new Givi fluorescent yellow jacket, white lid, and TWO flashing white Smart LEDS.

So I was a bit hard to spot.
Anyway, back to the point: I am now bionic. I have 15cm of stainless steel holding my right radius together.

Apparently I got up and lamped the git on the chin. As I had a bad concussion and was unconcious for 4 hours, I don't remember this part (shame).
So at the moment I don't ride, walk, or anything really.
Just shout at the kids to get me another beer.

    Toodle pip.

  • @markrjohnson - get well soon. That stainless steel will be a useful weapon once you're back in the saddle :)

    Don't do it!

  • I came to london last weekend (sans bike) and used the train. It took so long to get anywhere.
and you have to go on a fixed route there and back.
    rubbish

I'm in the same situation (well the next step, I got the job and am waiting to start). Mainly I'm thinking I'll turn left out of the gate (homes right). I reckon it'll be at least another 2 -3 mile for that "mistake" alone. Who knows how many more mistakes I could make in my navigation...

why didn't you take it on the coach?!

Bloody hell, it seems that some people drive with their eyes closed. Hope you're up and out on your bike soon!

Yeah, why didn't you take it on the coach?!?

I'm not allowed in winter... something about being invisible to traffic at night. Pointless really because I just go out riding when I get home anyway.

  • who tells you you're not allowed?
