  • stompy Am I the only person who sweats buckets when riding? I've got a 3 mile ride to work and I am drenched by the time I get here.

Wet wipes and a change just wouldn't cut it.

Some people are just sweaty. Lots of water in your diet? Lots of salt in your diet? Either of them could be the cause. That or genes. I don't sweat at all in my 7 miles but when I first started I was sweating buckets and feeling sick and unable to breath. That was because I wasn't fit at all. If you've been doing the run for a while then I'd say it's not likely to be the last option.

  • I work at an office with a shower - Useful during summer.
For the vegan amongst us - Charity shops are an alternative for second hand wool (If you can morally justify it), personally I shun second hand animal too so I'm stuck with my last remaining pair which, when they die, will have to be replaced with something else.

  • .

  • I use the shower at the gym; no facilities in the office.

Maybe I should try and ride in more gently. But where is teh fun in that?

Feet are starting to really freeze, though.

I was reading about this the other day for people who live in North America / Canada.Someone made the good point that cycling shoes tend to be quite tight and by forcing thick sock or two pairs of sock inside you can reduce the circulation to your feet and hence make you feet cold because of that. they suggested doubling up on socks but trying a looser shoe or one that is one size too big bla bla you get the idea. This morning I re-laced my shoes fully so they where not as tight, not only did this make getting my foot in easier it did also seem to keep my feet warmer, but it was warmer out side today.

  • Absolutely. I've often tried to ride at a gentle, sedate pace. But then someone will overtake me, or I'll see a green light that I have to catch, and it'll be race on! A shower at work is a lifesaver.

    Funny you should mention that.
A fella here said the same thing, and I am going to run a little experiment with some cheap shoes off the 'bay that I picked up (half a size too big).
I was going to try them tomorrow with two pairs of socks to see the difference.

I hope it ain't as slippery as this morning, because I like my shoes quite snug and think I may be a little nervy if they feel too loose.

  • i wear the minimal amount to keep warm and avoid sweating. this usually means a chilly first 5 mins of cycle but just right when get to work.

  • Dickies work pants

or in my case, Cotton Oxford rugby shorts, commando for maximum taint abuse

  • "No thick socks" is a policy I've used for ages after hearing the same advice about not packing your feet in tight as it cuts circulation and causes coldius footus syndrome.
Highly recommend toe-warmers - they plug the front of well vented shoes and keep your feet warm by reducing wind-chill and not circulation.

Also sweat bucket loads.. I almost took a picture of my t-shirt last night. The only dry bit on it was the bottom where it was overhanging my shorts.. the rest looked like I'd jumped into a swimming pool!

  • sweat or beer?!

  • hehe.. definitely sweat.. was too tired to drink beer.. might've drowned after falling asleep in my pint. :)

  • hippy hehe.. definitely sweat.. was too tired to drink beer.. might've drowned after falling asleep in my pint. :)
my god, call the paramedics hippy is halucinating. iv beer stat!

  • Thick socks will keep your feet warm, as long as nothing is too tight (as said above). Another tip that I've read, but never used (it's not really that cold in London), is to put your socks on, then a pair of plastic bags, then your shoes. Cuts out the wind chill.

I am thinking that I might modify an old pair of shoes for this winter by blocking all the mesh with something (ie gaffa tape) to keep my feet warm.

  • I did that ^^^^^ on a DofE expedition once as my boots lost their waterproofing and I got sodden feet. Works, but be warned - your feet will STINK!

  • Rather than start a new thread, I thought I'd post these here.

Not my thing (but some people may like them cough skinny fit cough), as they remind me of and unfortunately I'm old enough to remember these...

  • Any tips on summertime trousers, my winter office/road wardrobe is sorted with swrve but they are too warm now. Not so sure about Rapha. Anyone tried the new swrve cotton trousers, they looked creasy as hell in the pics.

  • Are Swrve's WWR 3/4 shorts too hot for sunny weather?

Just looking outside and feeling cold and miserably as it is pouring cats and dogs and I am wearing short shorts and having to leave in 15.

Was thinking of ordering some cycling gear when I get home.

  • I've got a pair of Swrve WWR 3/4s and they're pretty lightweight and breathable in my opinion (and I overheat very easily). Cooler than the standard cotton 3/4s I'd say.

Unfortunately they're not much more than drizzle-proof, though they do dry quickly.

(Disclaimer: mine are a few years old, not sure if they've changed them at all)
