andyf - don't worry, i'm sure you'd make it. i ride 10 minutes into work each day! if you've been riding for a while, i'm sure you're fit enough and we'll go at the pace of the slowest (well, there's always some bright spark who sprints off ahead, but then will wait and let the others play catch up). for me, also, this is going to be the longest ride i've done in quite a while (er, about 15 or 20 years!) so i'm certainly not racing to brighton. also, if you think of it slightly differently, in miles, 50 miles in 5 hours is 10 miles an hour - not a challenging pace at all, i don't think. factor in a few breaks etc and my guess is we won't be arriving before 3pm, probably later than that.
as for the normal sunday social - i really haven't a clue, but i'm pretty sure i'll be missing it ;-)
