hippy, ive ridden the dahon vitesse d7 to work few times. east putney to city. takes me 30-35mins. not much slower than the fixed. it's a 7 speed. i agree the diff between gears is stupid. either a hard slog or your spinning like crazy. but, it can be as fast as you like, i pass loads of people with that...even roadies!
the dahon's 20" so not as twitchy as the 16" bromptons. though it still is twitchy...but its maneuverability is excellent. good for weaving through tight spots.
