Took me 6 months of net based research/bargain hunting/assistance to complete my recent build, and that's bearing in mind I'm at a computer for all of my working day and most evenings.
Plus I wanted to learn all this stuff, and I had the luxury of a bike I enjoyed in the meantime.
Had I wanted to get up and riding straight away on something well built using decent (hard to source) components (ie utilising someone else's knowledge/skills/tools/time) then I have no doubt that paying someone to build you a bike is a great idea.
