MrSmith it's the same reason SS mtb'ing is seen as a bit odd.
it's just a bike with one gear not a license to cover your bike with silly 'one relly nice speed' stickers, beer cap stem caps, whiskey flask bottle cages etc
SS'ing started out as a bunch of mtb'ers who wanted to ride around without kitting up in lycra, without calorie counting, without the roadie-esque clique thing.
It grew. Then SS'ers started spending just as much on their machines as the 'serious' gearies they mocked in the first place. The originality was lost.
