What's your favourite gear ratio?

Personally, it now hovers around the 82 - 84 inch mark, for commuting/training around London and Richmond.

47x15 or 49x16, depending on which bike I'm on.

I've done 6 London to Brighton's, plus London to Oxford's on fixed, using ratios from 73" to 84", usually 79 - 84 inch. Even went up Ditchling Beacon an a 84" fixed ... those fat poser guys walking their £3K carbon, full-suspension mountain bikes up Ditchling looked really pissed when they saw me zig-zagging/grinding up the hill past them :)

I used to live in the countryside many years ago, in very hilly territory, when I first ventured into fixed/singlespeed, I was then on 67 to 73 inch, cycling for pleasure.

48-18 and im building one that should be done middle of next week that will be similar ratio 46-? but no decisions as of yet...any sugestions?

46 on 17 would be a bit higher, 46 on 18 would be a bit lower ... it's your call :)

I run 72" and know I could go a lot higher for most purposes 'cos most of London is damn flat. But there's certain hills I want to be able to really annihilate before I do.
I'm planning on treating myself to a smaller sprocket when I stop smoking!

I'm so scared of going down hills that i look forward to going up them, cos i know there's less of a chance of me losing control :)

Brett, included in my daily diet is multiple beers and/or red wine and 15-20 roll-ups a day, plus loads of pasta, cheese tomato, mayo, plus fresh basil ... but it's still not that difficult to ride to keep up with the £3k bike multiple gear posers on the road, with their Litespeed's, Colnago C40/C50's, Cervelo's etc.

It might take 1 or 2km to catch them up, then they blow, then you overtake them again :)

Seems to be Colnago central round here at the moment. Much pleasure to be had leaving them behind on a £20 Peugeot :-). Might feel a bit less smug on my Condor when it's finally finished, but even that's only cost £400. Seems like a fortune to me, but I'm guessing Colnagos are quite a bit more than that(?).

48x18 (72") fixed suits me fine around west london/heathrow.

Colnago master frame + full campag record gruppo will cost you a fortune!
that's why i stick with my old peugeot as well ;)

i used to mash on my road bike on 52-14 all the time. since i starting riding fixed i couldn't do that anymore, but i can spin much faster and actually go much faster and last longer.

48-18 at the mo will be 49-18 soon when i finally swap out my bb and cranks. much better for skidding since you dont end up with 3 skid patches.
might want to try 47-18 actually...

Usually 46 x 18 [68" gear] for my long distance stuff

Currently riding 49 x 18 72" gear on my Lambert

Smurfbike you rode Ditchling on 84" fixed? you must have thighs of steel, I rode it last week on 72" and that was hard enough.

48:18 and 48:20 on a flipflop.... I like both, both skid well.... I use the bigger gear for the longer rides where I need to go faster (48:18)
