• Todd
rear is now doing front duty on my current
    fix (it took some persuading).

You can do that? Would you just replace the bolt with a longer one? Where d'ya get 'em from?
tried to get a longer main bolt but couldn't find one, so I got a longer version of the threaded thing that receives the bolt from the back of the fork. It was too long so I cut it down a bit.

The main problem then was that the drilling was too close to the headset so that the chunky bit of the bolt that holds the spring was banging up against the headset. Could have spaced it out but it was important to get as much of the thread inside the fork as possible, so I enlisted the help of our friendly lab techs in college and got them to machine the bolt so it would fit under the headset. That wasn't quite enough so I went at it with a dremel tool and ground out a bit more so it would fit around the curve of the headset. what a palaver - but it worked!
