Help me choose Pedals & Shoes

  • I got speedplay frogs, which are ok, as well as the old type road pedals.

The road cleats are phenomenal for riding, and I did everything in them in 2005. Audax, road races, messenger championship, Marmotte and Ventoux sportives, track racing, 2 night rides, 1000k cycle tour....

They are absolutely no good for posing down the pub, however.

That's why I have the frogs for use with my (scuffed) Sidis

  • I could say similar of SPDs though which I am still hesitant to move away from.
A year or two of road racing (then moved to SPD-SLs), track racing (no good for standing starts though unless tension is way up and you can keep your feet straight), training, 2hrs daily commuting, 4 months of cycle touring over here, mountain bike racing.. and I'm still using them on the Raleigh here for commuting and stuff.
I have the original cleats that I fitted to my $50AUD Nikes 8+ years ago.
This is probably why I find it hard to justify moving to ATACs or something different. "If it ain't broke.. "

  • Why change?

Changing pedals and/or shoes can really fuck your knees up.

BTW, what happened to SPD-Rs? The Brixton olympic sprint teams were using them, and reckoned they were the boll*x for standing starts.

  • Shimano stopped making them in favour of SPD and SPD-SL. Lots of trackies still use SPD-R as it's supposed to have stronger cleat retention (metal cleat as opposed to plastic). Track is a small market though so I guess they went with the "lighter is better" roadie market instead?

  • Quite a few Aussie trackies use the Keywin pedal system which has a locking mechanism specifically for track use that stops the ability to unclip unless you release a little lever/clip under the pedal (I think).

  • You can adapt the SPD-SL pedals for use with straps on the track (something that could be done with SPD-R too):

So bill this set up works well...? I can't do them ATACS they are just too ugly
and I am looking to go clipless on at least one of my bikes

which sidi's do you use ...?

  • bullets as they were the only model in stock at cyclefit at the time i went, i invested in theyr custom footbeds with the cash i saved from buying more expenisve shoes.

  • Someone mentioned Specialized Sonoma's, i have an old pair (without insoles - i lost them) which are looking for a new home....

  • photoben I've been looking at some Powergrips, then you can use your own shoes!

how? sounds interesting does anyone have a link or a picture?

    many thanks

    ^what a palava putting in a link!

  • i might have to jump on the attac train... now all i need to do is soucre a pari of size 13and1/2 sidi dominators from a mate in the usa...

  • can someone recommend me some decent but not too expensive weighted pedals that i can fit powergrips to?

i want them weighted so the side with the powergrip is always facing up, many thanks.

  • hippy I'm still undecided if I should go for casual-looking stuff for pub jaunts, etc. or the full-on race look crap?
One better for riding the other better for not riding. Mostly I'm riding so I'm erring on the side of the racier ones.
At least when I fall on my ass in the pub I can blame the shoes! :D

I think the shoes that try not to look like cycling shoes look awful. Just go for full on race and everyone knows straightaway they're proper cycling shoes, rather than "those shoes look shite".

  • MA3K ATAC is the only consideration for retention(spring at front - no nasty unclips) and ease of use(big rails) + zero maintenance.

One you've ridden with them you wont swap back.

yes yes yes you know it

  • Any good white shoes that'll go with atacs? I need to stay true to my Essex roots ;-)

  • Essex armour. Perfectly fitted with:

So right - they have the whiff of those horrid "MBTs" that power-ladies now wear.

Accidentally bought my Sidi Dominators today. Oops.

    still awaiting advice.

    many thanks

no idea about what pedals or what powergrip is.... but if you get cheap pedals and they aren't weighted just stick some lead tape on the side you want to face down.
Shouldn't take much overal weight to swing them one way or the other.

  • ^nice one cheers!

  • i really want powergrips but will have to get new pedals too grrrrrr.

i think if i lean any more into turns i am going to clip my pedal and end up a bit messy.
has anyone else had this problem and is there any other solution other than going slower round corners???

  • Shorter cranks. Lean the bike the other way. Don't ride around corners.

  • yeah i think i will have to get shorter cranks:(
real pain as i dont have the faintest idea about bikes eg what will fit etc etc.

  • Save up and buy a Miche crankset. Done.. well except for chainline issues, possible chain width issues, bottom bracket fitting issues, chainring sizes.. ;)
