  • ok i've been using for a while and today when i was training my trainer pointed out that i've build up a disbalance on my upper back and said: " have you been using one of those shoulder bags on your bike?"
    me: "yes why?"
t:"well you're lucky to have a lean body and that we spotted this early enough but notice how one shoulder looks longe and the other is kind of crumed up towards your neck, you might wanna use a rucksack insted."
    me:"good point"

  • You're probably wearing it way too loose. The weight should be on your back and not your shoulder. The strap just holds it in place.

  • it's pretty tight if feels effortless when i wear it but i just popped a backpack on and i can tell the difference

  • Buy a PAC, then when you are carrying a heavier load you can use the x-strap and waist-band for equal support.

  • messenger bags are worse for your shoulders, rucksacks much worse for your lower back... up to you, but i come with a lower back problem so its a mess bag for me

Yeah, tell me about it. Krypto lock + tonne of college work = crippled back, regardless of how tight i pull the straps up my back.

  • PAC bags Where I used to work they gave them out free. They are cavernous in depth and width, triple stitched, fully adjustable, have an x-strap/side strap/waist support, foam pad insert, spare straps for ridiculous loads. And they last -forever- I got mine in 2000 and use it nearly everyday.

  • don't pac bags cost a fortune though, like £300 upwards?

  • yeah, like around £200 io think an osteopath would give you about 4 treatments for that cash...

  • Depends on who you know, what you do, and/or where you work.

I agree, pac and pac-like bags with two straps that sit high on your back is the most comfortable and best for your body.

  • go to brick lane bikes for all your pac bag needs.
if you try to order direct you get stung big time on tax (i paid £40 tax just to get it off the post bods)
pacs are well comfy and you could probably kip in one if you needed to

  • I used a shoulder bag for 14 years as a messenger, and there were times when it hurt me, but I never suffered any upper or lower back problems. I used only single straps and rarely bothered with cross-strapping.

In my view, these types of problems are rarely to do with weight carried externally, more likely to do with muscle imbalances, leading to distortions of posture. Is cycling your only form of exercise? Do you stretch? Have you considered yoga or some other sort of complementary activity?

    Is sex an acceptable answer?

What am I saying? The last time I spoke to some pretty girls I started talking about cycling and ended up going home alone.

Clearly I need another form of exercise that might actually happen!

I don't have a problem with my back it doesn't hurt or feels uncomfortable.

and Dave, never talk to a girl about something you have an obsessive passion about eg football or cycling, i'm not that fanatic about bicycles and my girl calls me a bike geek but i'm ok with that coz she's my girl already ,you get me? Immagine what a 20 something early 30s girl would think when you start mentioning your custom buil serotta with space age components and matching lycra outfit to go with it.
