  • Well yesterday I striped my left hand crank pedal threads so I am looking at new cranks. I couldjust go out and buy a new set of cheap road cranks but I would like to take this opertunity to upgrade to a proper single speed crank. Does anyone have any input on the Singo RD messenger cranks
    http://www.hubjub.co.uk/sugino/sugino.htm

yes they are not purfect but £60 including a b.b is not bad.

Any other sugestions for a cheap crank setup.

  • Not quite that cheap, but the Miche Primato Pista cranks aren't bad looking for £90

Looks similar to the Shimano Dura-Ace ones too that are over twice that price.

You'd need a BB for it though, so that bumps it way above the Sugino price you've got already.

  • I am flexible on price if the quality is greatly increased. Only thing is the frame is just a cheap old road frame but frame and forks are about the only original parts but it still feel silly having so many parts on the bike that are worth more than the frame!

  • Sounds like the way to upgrade... next thing is the frame and fork ;)

  • While we're on about cheap-o cranksets. On-one make a nice one (probably a rebaged version of one of the above), but it comes in a nice black or mirror finish (which is a little different). Can get 'em with square or ISIS tapers. And your supporting a nice UK based business (although the parts are made in China/Taiwan). 50 quid.

OK ignore that, the chainline on these things is 47.5mm, which is way off for a 'track' chainset. They may be of some value if you're using a road hub in the back rather than a track hub.

For cheap-o solutions the RDs are nice. Also keep seeing cheap-o cranks (such as the Truvativ ones fitted to Bianchi Pistas) for about 50-60 quid on Ebay

    yep, I run them.

hmmm..well, nice BB, but I had to take some serious meat off the arse of the LHD crankarm after I tightened them up again as it was biting into the edge of the BB cap. so it was on the grinding wheel and not very pretty.

that may have just been mine though..just seems a bit of poor shaping/design on the arm, the drive side is fine.

the ring is 44th and 1/8. it's not fantastic to be honest, but works. a tight fit so don't expect to be able to centre it if your tension is uneven. chainring bolts are made of cheese, I swapped them out for some proper SSteel

ok for £60 and they look allright, incidentally mine are genuine 165mm, not re-drilled 170s like hubjub shows (I did get them from there, Will is an excellent geezer) not sure why.

  • The Miche ones are nice, but quite a bit more expensive and have a proprietary 135mm bcd which is a slight pain.

The Stronglight ones and (I think) the Sugino rds are 130mm so you have more options for chainrings.

Another option is to get yourself to the good friday jumble at Herne Hill and try and find something nice there. You could probably pick up some nice old campy track cranks for about £50. I'm sure there will be lots of competition though!

  • if I had the choice again, with hindsight..

    the stronglight ST100 with a 44th ring for £77

  • Thanks for the input.

i was ab it confused on the onone website, one part says made for 120 mm rear hub the next be goes on about road and mbt 130 and 135 mm hubs and 47.f mm chainlines!

I would love to go to the jumble at Hern Hill. It is so anoying after a winter of no events it seems just I startbeing silly bussy all the rides and jumbble start to happen. Grrr!

    T

  • I'm running the stronglight one from hubjub. Didn't fit it myself tho :(

Is it just me who finds the on-one site really hard to use?

  • rkn:Is it just me who finds the on-one site really hard to use?

That's a pet hate of mine, the vast majority of cycling shop websites are bordering on impossible to use.

I'm sure there's a killing to be made if someone could just make a really intuitive front-end with nice pictures and all of the technical information on products. A prettier Harris Cyclery or something.

Definitely - hubjub is doing ok tho, but they dont have much content to deal with.

  • yeah, you gotta scout around a bit more if you want deals online for track or fixed gear..

it's easier with other forms of cycling, there's a bucket load of shit for the mtb guys, cos they spend money like water, and some well established places for BMX.

wheels especially, getting custom built track wheels online is difficult in comparison

  • there's a bucket load of shit for the mtb guys, cos they spend money like water, and some well established places for BMX.

Yeah I would ride my mbt all over the place as a teenager but unless you where rich it was hard to compeate with all of expesive bikes. MBTing is great fun but has far too many bike snobs, I like to ride hard but can't afford to brake a £2000 bike. BMX baby! £250 may not get you the best bike it will get you one that is tough as nails.

I hope fixedgear does not have to go through the crash that BMX went through to get it where it is today. I don't think it will though as there are already alot of rider owned compaies out there shaping the scene.

  • I would second the motion for the stronglight track crankset w/bb. I have one and find it really robust and a joy to ride with.
I also have the Miche Primato w/bb on another bike and it creeks when I'm out of the saddle and up hills rather irritatingly.

  • Kiwi Cycles has RPM (FSA) Cranksets at £30:00. Getting the silver ones means you can polish off the branding ;)

I've heard good things about Andel cranksets. In Japan they are sold under the name Radius and have a good rep and 144thingyspacing.

  • i'm sure brick lane bikes have half a set of stronglights they rescued from someone's bike recently.

maybe you could make them offer. they may even throw in a bottom bracket.

  • Beware of the self-extracting bolts which come fitted to the Stronglight cranks as they are crappy cheap aluminium: you can well end up with no internal threads in the bolt-hole and therefore no way to remove crank arm, even with a proper crank puller. That´s what happened to a friend of mine. Replace them if possible. The Stronglight are fairly OK, esp. for price, but not particularly well-finished.

  • no edd - it's ok, you can axle grind them off, or so they say.

  • Different case, he didn´t get the BLB treatment though

  • yes,* i know*

  • Go buy the RD cranks with ring from Condor, £49.99.
They are not the same as those pictured in HubJub, the 165 drilling has proportionate crank arms.
I needed them after this happened last week:
Had these on the Pista for a year and a half, then the Steamroller. In-total about 3 years riding.
Note, I removed the chainring bolt after-the-fact the spider broke in three places.

  • ouch.

By the way, all 165 RD cranks have proportionate crank arms now, whether you get them from hubjub or elsewhere.

they're ok, but the bottom bracket on mine seems to have a bit of a wobble.

  • i've got those stronglight st-1000 and i like 'em. the miche ones have the 135 bcd and an ISO taper, both of which are a bit annoying. very similar otherwise probably. miche are shinier? personally i rate the stronglight over the sugino rd but thats just my preference.
