Weirdly, there's not much of an audible room boom. The sub helped in this regard - with just speakers alone it's a more muddy sound. The low pass filters in the amp must be doing the right thing.
I do have some decent headphones, but some days have been +35°c so it gets hot on the ears.

I'll investigate the room treatment, thanks. The speakers are sitting on some heavy rubber tiles and there's little resin feet on the speaker base. They're isolated fairly well.
the narrowness of the space/proximity of the corners can’t help much. speakers are rear ported plus a sub, i’m guessing there’s a room boom at a certain frequency helping to muddle things up.
I would buy a decent pair of headphones...
