The shoe community adores GS and most people don't care that they're made in China. The product speaks for itself.
Think there are some fairly ingrained beliefs/stereotypes about ‘made in china’ which you could understand would cause that kind of practice.
It is likely pretty challenging to convince the lay person that items made in china are of the same ‘quality’ as those made elsewhere. So from a brand/marketing perspective I can understand this
