Have you tried putting the bolt back in and giving it a little tap on the head?
-
• #3478
Thanks, that did indeed do the trick after I worked up the courage to hit it hard enough. I’m not sure how best to go about getting the split ring out now.
Edit: turns out wiggling it out with a finger works ok. What’s the recommended aftermarket compression plug to replace this one?

ancient Look fork
How ancient, is it 1", or 9/8"?

HSC4 - 9/8"

Yeah, 1 1/8”. Full frame pictured. I bought it in a moment of profound weakness but it might be fun I suppose. Though it does have this slight ‘ring of death’ on the steerer, which is very shallow (won’t catch a fingernail) but is there. Not great obviously but how concerned should I be?

I'd used to bond a custom made long knurled aluminum sleeve with a tapped hole (for the stem cap compression) some distance from the top of the fork into used older carbon forks.
Bit over engineered, but I still have all my teeth. :) -

Oh hey, I have one of those forks! Scored it for nothing - it had been junked, presumably had an incident on a roof rack; one dropout was severely bent. Bent it back, which required heaps of force, and then rode it for years.
My verdict - despite weighing fuck-all, these are tough as nails. Nice shape, too.
Wouldn't be concerned at all about the shiny ring from the headset collet.

I’ve been offered a look 585 with a full Campagnolo Record ti 10 speed group for a decent price - what do owners make of the 585? Any good?

They're great once you allow for the fact that they're of their time and therefore won't take tyres bigger than 25mm.

I really enjoyed mine when I had it. Tester is obviously right too. A modern bike will be more practical, and do double check how the seat mast shortening had been done, if at all.

seat mast shortening
585 takes a normal 27.2mm round post.

This thing - I don’t need it but it’s a bit of a bargain I think - price of full build is less than I’d expect (but don’t fully understand due to disc brake market etc) to pay for almost total record ti 10 -

585 was the best carbon bike I had (until Parlee) recommended. I vaguely recall the headset was proprietary, so have a check.
That one looks mint -mine failed at drive side dropout paint bubbling was the warning sign -

"Proper" 585/585Ultra uses a standard headset, proprietary Headfit adjuster is on the 585 Optimum, 586 and 595. Replacement bearings seem to be readily available. It's obvious which is which as the Headfit collar/bearing cover is splined for an HT2 style BB tool for adjustment.
ETA: From the catalogues, it looks like the final year (2010) 585 Origin also got the Headfit

Ahha! Good to know - this Look is a different wheelset, flite saddle and bar angle away from perfect… I’ve got a potentially cracked Z4 that needs repairing as well - not sure how to spend the money…

Does anyone know how to get the expander out of an ancient Look fork (HSC 4)?
