These are very cool - do I have to do a custom order if I want one to fit an extra large 63cm noggin?

That's just the best! I'm so pleased it got to you safe and sound. Enjoy! And do let me know how the waxed cotton works out.

liking the purple waxed cotton - do you have any more of that fabric?
-
• #33
I do! What did you have in mind?

Received my cap today. Really well made and looks great. Great that there is no elastic and fits my head perfectly. Thanks Pete, i'll be back I'm sure...

That's great news - and thanks for letting me know.
If you have a moment, similar commentary on my Etsy shop would be greatly appreciated.
Looking forward to making the next one for you.
Happy cycling!

Just ordered one to try! I love a cap and usually wear one under my helmet, but my fat head has always been an issue so great to have the options.

I just spotted the order - thanks so much!
I'll wrap it up and have it with the courier after the school run.

I ordered mine (which you guys saw in a picutre my wife took). Unfortunately it didn't fit, it was quite a bit too big, I could fit all 8 fingers under. I remeasured my head and I was correct at 58cm, measured the hat and it was 60-61cm depending on which measurement I took.
Reached out to @UnclePete and he made another without hesitation. I'm posting the original back including the £5 note he included to cover the post. Mistakes happen, I don't know if it was my mistake or his as I don't make hats but he rectified it quickly and was polite and friendly.
People say you only know if someone has good customer support when things go wrong. Pete has shown he stands behind his products and work.

I'm so pleased the replacement arrived!
You never mentioned whether it fits as it should?

Perfect!

Glorious! I'll make a note of the pattern size for future orders.
Looking forward to getting some long-term feedback on the utility of the waxed cotton.

well, I was pondering a cycling cap with earflaps to keep the wind out, but then again maybe just the regular cap... (my right eardrum gets really sore in a cold breeze...!) how do you measure size? I'm somewhere around the 58-59cm mark depending on where the tape goes... (horizontal, or pulled down at the back where my usual cap reaches down to...)

The head measurement is usually taken 1 cm above the ears around the head where the cap band would lie. So, if you're wanting to wear the cap lower at the back, then 59 cm it is.

Chaps, what are your views on having the bold printed fabric on the inside vs the outside of your cycling cap?
If you've given my Etsy shop a test drive, you'll notice that most of my caps have a solid colour for the crown and printed fabric for the liner.
I've always liked it this way around because it's like each cap has a little something hidden away just for you. A bit of flash on the brim, of course.
But someone recently asked me to make their cap the other way around, with the bold print for the crown, and I really like it.

I like it, but I guess it depends on the print! You'll probably cater for more people with safer colours on the outside to begin with but the variety would be fun.
Just to say I love mine and it fits great being a gentleman of significant head girth. I'd definitely be up for another one soon. The cotton is really nice, but any thoughts on making a lighter more breathable variety in time for the summer as well?

Great to hear that the cap fits. And thanks for the feedback on my question.
All of my earlier caps were made without liners, which leaves you with a single layer of cotton twill with a slim ribbon headband. It's about as breathable as a natural fibre cap gets, aside from making the whole thing out of cotton poplin - the liner fabric - which would be lighter and more breathable, but less hardwearing.
I'd be more than happy to whip one up for you in time for summer. Let's chat.

Question there was a polo player on here hannes I think his name was and his missus used to make cycling caps out of recycled materials. Would this be something you could do?
I’ve got some old t-shirts that I’d like to be repurposed, as the armpits have come apart. Would principally be whatever the logo, chest design that I’d be interested in saving.Let me know.
Thanks

The short answer is no, unfortunately.
I'd love to make upcycled casquettes, mind you, and for exactly the reason you touch on - there's a lot of nostalgia inherent in an item you've had for years.
But T-shirt fabric is an absolute PITA to sew with, and it's not an ideal fabric for making caps/hats because of the stretchiness.
Any piece of meaningful clothing made of something close to cotton twill (like chinos) or cotton poplin (like a button-up shirt) and I'm all in.

Hi there - love the caps but do you make them with a larger brim? I would like a cap that has the same shape as a cycling cap but the sun protection of a larger brim.

Thanks so much!
I can make pretty much any brim shape/length/width, provided you have a clear idea of what you're after. You'll see a custom cap listing in my Etsy shop, which will allow for custom choices.
Cycling caps have a short brim to maintain forward and peripheral vision while riding, so that's something to keep in mind when choosing a larger brim.
i'd rather it fit like a hat tbh
