• Just bought 1970's Holdsworth in need of loving care and attention, stripping the bits is progressing. However the paintwork is looking ropey, needs a re spray. So any recommendations please.

  • Pics and are you sure it actually needs a respray? There is nothing like nice patina and history on an old bike. IMO if you're after a new looking bike, buy one.

Also as you're looking at c.£80-150 is it actually an interesting/expensive/quality enough of a frame to justify the money?

Thoroughly cleaning, t-cutting and polishing/waxing will almost definately bring the life back to the colour/tone of the paint and remove the marks. Then you should just be left with a nice patina.

  • ^ patina, ffs

  • Not after a new bike finish, there are some areas of rust, so frame needs stripping and repainting. Only bike repainters found so far are in the North, which means transport cost and uncertain return delivery.

  • So I asked this to deathly silence on another thread, but here seems more apt:

How can I remove the 3T lgos from bars like this? Or is it a case of mask it and rattlecan numerous times?

  • Acetone will whip that off in minutes.

  • Great, thanks.

  • ^just knew 'mister respray' would have the answer

  • Don't be starting that nonsense again.

  • a simple heat gun to strip paint should suffice... certainly beats sanding

  • I would never bother polishing out all the rust pitting. Frames get weeker as you remove the metal.

  • are their any painting knowledgeable types on the forum?

Im trying to find if theres a name to a technique (idea) i have for the way i want my bike painted, its a new custom frame so has never been painted before (steel)

I want to sort of paint the downtube a bit one colour where the logos would be, then mask off the decals with vinyl or stickers or something, then paint the frame the colour i want it to be, and remove the stickers so the decals painted underneath? if that makes sense

i ask here before i try and explain what i want to the framebuilder who then would have to try explain to his painter, is this an actual thing?

  • i don't know a lot about painting a bike but i don't think you should paint only localy where the letters are gonna be, you should probably paint the entire frame in the colour you want the letters to be, then tape them off and paint the second layer

anyone who is more knowledgable can correct me if i'm wrong

  • Yes I have UTFS and found a plethora of paint related threads but nothing that helps.

I'd like a London based powder coater / painter that's used to dealing with bike frames and can do a good job for not a heap of cash.

    Thanks! :)

  • Armourtex and Mario Vaz are the go to guys i gather

  • ^ Thanks, just had a look through the Armourtex site - looks good not crazy prices either.

  • Armortex: Their work is average at best, you get what you pay for IMO

If the frame is cheap and not worth spending money on then fine but anything good you should pay for a good finish.

  • +1 on Mario

  • Not sure if there's a more appropriate thread for this. I've picked up a titanium bike as a gift for my gf for her birthday, and I'm considering making some alterations to it. Mainly to try and disguise the branding to deter thieves (as it'll be her everyday commuter), but also I think she'd prefer a bit of colour to the raw ti finish. Rather than powder coating I was thinking of getting some sort of coloured adhesive vinyl(?) to go around the three main tubes of the frame. Would be less permanent that powder coating as would give the option to remove further down the line if needed.

Anyone have any suggestions of where to look for such a thing, if it exists? Or is there something else I should be looking for? Thanks

  • You could spray on a thick coat of plastidip it just peels off if you don’t like it.

  • I’m about to have a frame powder coated. It’s a new frame which has been phosphate dipped and ED coated under the powder coat.

Having just had a frame I’d had powder coated previously rust through, I’m thinking of not having this frame sand blasted prior to paint to preserve the treatments.

How will it look with another powder coat on top?

  • You should be able to just go over the top of the old new coating, but it will probably look thick, make the tubes seem bigger and plasticy
