Just had a huge row with my family when they visited us for pre-Christmas. They’re very much not socially or politically aware, and are so so far away from accepting anything that even slightly deviates from their norms.

I hate that they’re so hateful, I hate that there’s a world view which is so hateful, so reductive, so insular. The obsession and identity with, and of, categorical black and white thinking. The dismissal of any idea, fact, or reason for nuance.

The idea that others are simply play things for their strict worldview.

Just fuck that, and fuck them, for the things they’ve said, which I won’t post here.

Not looking for a response, just really need to get this off my chest, so I won’t reply. Sorry you all had to read this in the first place if I’m honest, but I have very few other outlets.

We’re more polite in our family, but the same blinkered thinking underlies our discourse. Luckily don’t see most of them anymore, either through death or mutual agreement.

I’m really sorry to hear that, particularly through death. Personally, it really gets me every time there’s a statement like “science progresses one death at a time”. It seems quite real, but undermines ideas I hold close to my heart. To apply that to family is heartbreaking in more ways than one.

It’s alright, my parents are gone (2013 & 2016) they were the least problematic and most polite. My sister (early 2017) was a tough loss.
The others won’t be missed by me.
