Had a chance to see the real Thrust SSC close-up shortly after it broke the record. I worked for BAE on the Isle of Wight and it was parked up, like it was part of the company car pool, behind our office, no barriers, chains or guard. I could have climbed onboard if I’d dared. Some of the details on it were insane for a supersonic vehicle. Craziest thing was the wheels which looked almost exactly like large versions of the nylon pivot wheels on warehouse pump-trucks.
