• Just put random sealant in there. Has anyone ever really had that problem they say you might have if you mix the wrong sealant? I think it's fake.

  • I use whatever I have at hand, never had a problem. Normally I'd top up only if I change tyres or go bikepacking so anything I used before it's dry anyways.

  • I think it was only really Caffelatex that reacted badly with the ammonia -based ones?

Stans and the Stans-like stuff like X-Sauce or whatever probably just vibe.

  • From the chat a few days ago

    You have been warned

  • Where are people buying Tesa tape now, seems to have doubled in price everywhere ffs

  • Tesa 4289, Viking tapes, most sizes under £15 delivered

  • Thanks, didn't have 21 or 23mm though

  • What a shambles. Half a bottle of sealant over his workshop.

Imagine doing that shit in your little London flat?

This is why I'm an injector advocate (and probably won't be using Challenge tyres any time soon)

Oof and this was before he mentioned he'd put the rear on the wrong way.

  • Powder coating tape is a good alternative, picked up a comment on here suggesting it and have been using it for the past 2y with great success. I actually prefer it to Tesa 4289, particularly if working in winter/cold when the Tesa can get a bit fragile..

  • I may have 2 x 30mm Challenge tyres for sale soon>>>>>>>>

  • Same here. Powder coat masking tape is much easier to use and much more reliable in use.

  • Challenge do recommend talcum powder!

  • Is that the green stuff? I've used the clear/green tape that someone suggested for a while. I still have a roll of Tesa tape for road wheels that I've not had issues with.

  • That video induced some nightmares. God I hate tubeless (most of the time).

  • Is there a difference/point to the colouring?

  • Did he just go straight from getting it on the rim to loading the sealant? I always inflate without sealant first and then leave it overnight if poss.

  • Yeah.

I tend to do that with new tyres, if nothing else to see what the seal is like before sealant is added. But I also use a syringe - it's a bit more faff but it's definitely cleaner and I recommend using one if you don't have a workshop/outside.

  • Not to my knowledge, I was just taking the piss

  • But I also use a syringe

The funny bit is that he also did in the video, should have gone through the valve!

  • Ah yeah good point. So he owns one but doesn't use it and then hoses down half his place?

  • So finally got my Challenge tyres mounted. In the instruction video it mentions getting one edge of the bead sat on the shoulder of the rim. A couple of blasts with the airshot and got 40psi. Then topped up with sealant to get the full seal, which I dont think is the point of sealant. Anyway, up and running. Wouldn’t fancy my chances of getting an inner tube in.

  • Just built a wheel with a hookless rim and need to set up the tyre on it tomorrow. I’ll be doing it at work so I can use the airline which will hopefully make things go easier.

I’d normally pop a tyre on with a tube first to a) press the rim tape down and b) get one bead seated but this time I want to transfer a tyre and it’s sealant from another wheel. Should I stick a different tire and rubber on first to press the tape down or just press it down as much as I can by hand? Can you even put a tube on a hookless rim?

  • I don’t know if this actually does anything, but I put think gloves on, put a damp rag in the microwave to heat it up and use that to stick the tape down. Seems to work pretty well at getting the tape to really stick.
