Is it just me being stubborn and only taking a letter when I've given up on it? I've never used the hint either. I may be an idiot.

i think using the hint is more cheating than a letter. you get letters in real crosswords so its more realistic. but the game is the game and anyhting that keeps me engaged is good.

I take a letter / hint / whatever I need, if I can't solve it by the time breakfast is over.

I don't trust myself to mull over it all day and inevitably forget to go back to it, thus losing my streak (again).

It's not meant to be mulled over all day is it? It's a quick thing, if you can't get it, get the hint, see why, add new pattern to solving mechanism in your head, move on.
