  • Massive induction convert. I think the only thing I miss is wok cooking on an induction need to invest in a proper outdoor rig a la @dbr to up my wok hey game

  • Low barrier to adoption: my burner cost about the same as a tour of bouji London mince pies

  • Our gas oven will be going next week and when we've built a kitchen to put it in we'll have induction.

If you look into the research done on gas hobs and indoor air pollution it's pretty scary stuff, the risk of explosions aside.

  • Lidl are doing a Daewoo 2000w single induction for £24.99 at the moment, just saying.

  • It's almost like we should move on from burning dinosaur remains in our caves because there's better technology available now!

  • I thought wok cooking would work well with the high heat from induction?

  • Burn 🔥 🔥

  • My smaller flat-bottom wok does work well on induction

  • You just have to get used to a different technique because obviously if you’re moving the pan a lot you either lose heat or scratch the hob

  • Has anyone got positive or negative experiences of a rolling knife sharpener? Am fed up with blunt knives and want to get something both decent but easy and a sharpening steel feels too much like a faff to me.

  • On the subject of induction hobs ours cracked with quite a loud noise a couple of weeks ago

Only cheap (Lamona) but we claimed on the guarantee but it looks like the claim will be rejected as the induction job was siliconed in by the kitchen fitter

Apparently a no-no to put a small bead of silicone when fitting …

  • Not rolling but I have the Lansky Knife Medic pull through sharpener. Yeah I get a better finish with a stone and this is probably too aggressive but if gets everything pretty close.

You could ask in the knife thread, if you dare.

  • How are they supposed to be mounted? Just tension clips?

  • Ours had a sticky like pad/gasket & clips. Bit harsh denying a warranty claim over a small flexible silicone bead!

  • I want to try one, looking at reviews, cheap ones do the job, but the grinding plates wear out quickly.

The Minosharp pull through are pretty good. Not great for German style knives with a bolster as it stops the sharpening near the choil.

  • Undernocircumstancesshouldthehobbesealedwithsiliconesealant! This will make it impossible to remove the appliance at a later date without causing damage to it.

That still doesn't seem like grounds to deny a warranty claim if it's cracked in situ.

  • Yep, some sort of gasket that came with it, Lamona say the silicone bead stops the glass from expanding and contracting causing it to break

Not going to get too stressed, Was going to get a new one as with more than one area on highest power reduces the power on the others.

Something I never knew about until reading on here. Going to get one that goes turbo on several areas.

  • That expanding and contracting thing sounds like a whole bunch of bullshit.
Isn’t silicon used because it’s flexible? And it will shear off if it’s stretched too much?

Depending on the size you need, I quite like the look of the Samsung ones.
Has a funky flame light to show when it’s on, and some models have a magnetic removable dial which I think would be pretty useful.

  • The thermal expansion reason is clearly bollocks.
I would be asking Lamona Technical Services for a clear explanation of the mode of failure.

I would have thought that the (unreactive) plasticisers used in all 'cheap' siicone sealants are much more likely to migrate into the toughened / borosilicate* glass and cause stress cracking.
Of course, don't reveal this to Lamona TS.

[* not certain the nature of the glass used for induction hobs].

  • What an absolute bunch of cunts. It's fucking silicone not cement.

  • I remember the manual for our aeg was explicit that it shouldn't be siliconed.

I'd definitely get one where every zone can be full power at once.

  • Give Lamona their due, the instructions explicitly say do not use silicone, seems counter intuitive but it's there in writing as I checked.

Yep, looking to get one that can have full power all zones, should be OK as it has its own circuit.

  • Provided it's not a hobby for you, regularly using any sort of knife sharpener gives you sharp knives. Some of the cheaper gizmos can leave a slightly fine serated edge, but if you dgaf, it'll be fine for cooking.

Personally I find a steel the easiest.

✅ Big, so you can locate it in your overfilled drawers
✅ Big ergonomic handle, so you can easily hold it rather than working out what surface to rest it against
✅ Quick, so you can spend more time doing the things you love (TBF those little gizmos are quick too)

I got a pro cook one to replace my aging alix one. It's nice and not too pricey. But equally my previous dirt cheap one also did the job fine.

If it's not something you care about, don't over think it. Just buy the Lansky one umop3pisdn recommend.
