  • My GP wife agrees. Will opt for the prostate check when I'm next due a check up. Balls tend to be self-serviced, but a good reminder. Thanks!

  • These are varifocals but I ended up with 6/5 vision for distance

  • Do I need a check?

  •

  • I’m in early 50s and have been thinking about the prostate test, but what puts me off is that there is presumably some rationale behind the absence of a national screening program, in that the risks of over-diagnosis and over-treatment may outweigh (at a population level) the benefits of earlier detection of those cancers which would actually proceed to be harmful. My dad got diagnosed a couple of years ago at 78 when by chance had a PSA test which was significantly elevated, followed by digital exam, followed by biopsy, which confirmed malignant tumour, and after hormone treatment and a month of radiotherapy he recently got the all clear.

  • Obviously recognise age and family history would place me in a high risk group but would prefer to hedge my bets on seeing the outcome of the soon to start TRANSFORM study comparing risk benefit of a number of existing and new diagnostic and treatment options. Should be 3 years until they get the results from the first patient cohort of 12500 men in UK, then another 300000 men into next cohort but first results of that probably a decade away or so I think

  • Finger not thumb

  • Isn't it all men will have prostate enlargement if you live long enough and elargement is similar symptoms to cancer hence the check.

  • Yes exactly - elevated PSA and enlarged prostate can both be attributable to other non-cancer related causes, leaving biopsy as current standard of care for confirmatory testing, which is in itself inherently risky to perform, and the new study aims to compare it to newer diagnostic tools like fast MRI etc

  • A friend was just diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer at 54. He has been told men with simiar cancers to his typically live 4 to 7 years from diagnosis. The treatments he needs to achieve those 4 to 7 years are pretty awful.

  • Yes, I think wife says something like all men over 80 (or maybe 90 I can't remember) probably have prostate cancer.

A lot of hospitals have started doing prostate MRIs which are much better than traditional methods for detection.

Also, one for us bike riders, don't ride bikes for a couple of days before PSA test (or have sex/masturbate) because that can all give false high PSA.

  • Damn, doing all three at once is one of my favourite past times.

  • I went for the old cunt MOT and the GP was more than ambivalent about the PSA test. Decided not to bother.
Asked me whether I was taking a supplement as the T test result was so high. Just saying...

  • I did the blood test a few months ago, my GP was happy with that. Dad had stage 2 twenty years ago, radiotherapy fixed him up. It's just the senile dementia I need to worry about now.

  • My MOT is back, I need to take 600-2000 doobries of vit-D. Asking here as you’re all experts and doctors no nowt but can anyone recommend a multi-vitamin with high vitamin-D in the above range? I wandered into Holland and Barret before wandering straight back out after seeing an overwhelming range of options.

  • Access to Costco?
Their own brand Kirkland range has a Vit D specific option or a multi that includes enough Vit D.

  • I’ve indirect access so will take a look.

  • Boots 3-for-2 works in your favour on the high street and Vitabiotics do the strength you’re looking for.

Just a warning though, I took between 3,000 and 10,000 units a day for 2 years to try and sort out my D levels and it made no measurable difference to that or my general mood. You just don’t absorb it very well. It may work better for you but don’t expect miracle results 👍

  • You should move to Australia.

  • Thanks

  • Seen I’m a celeb, looks like it rains all the time.

  • You're right, it's shit.

  • and the food looks a bit rough

  • Had a questionable yogurt before bed. Indigestion kept me from falling asleep the entire night. Gonna be a crappy day.

  • Possibly in more ways than one.
