  • ... you need a tool? 😳
Would be interested in the spider

  • I have the exact same cranks with 110 spider and a direct mount 38t STONE ring that I need to sell as a set unfortunately ..

  • I feel like further winterising my road bike by making it 1x.
Just feeling like something more minimal even if it is ultimately less versatile.
The more minimal I've been building my bikes the more I think I enjoy them.
    Could be a terrible decision.

    How does 46 x 11-32 sound?
Mostly Kent and Surrey. Solo and group riding at about 27 - 30 kph avg.
    Weekly Paceline at 45 - 50 kph.

  • I did this a couple of years ago although went down to 44 I think to get over the punchy little hills in Kent. It was perfect for all occasions apart from fast group rides where they'd pedal on the descents and I just ran out of gears.
At 60k, it's like 120rpm cadence or something. It's probably more like 110 on a 46 so if you like a spin and you can push it up the hills, I say go for it

  • And that was with a 32 sprocket on the back?
Tempted to give it a go if I can get these Rotor cranks working.

@amey any chance you’d be able to send a pic of your Rotors as you have them setup? I’m trying to figure what I’m missing, other than the spider.
And do you use a standard BB with them?
Also what’s this business with a special tool

  • Amey is the special tool

    They just bolt up

Have you heard of fixed gear bikes? Apparently they're a thing!

  • My road bike came setup with 1x (46t front - 11-32 on the back), It seems to work fine for most of what I'm doing (kent, surrey etc but no speedyboi laps). You do sort of spin out on anything over 50kph but if I get overtaken going downhill I simply don't care. I get what you mean w/ the minimal build approach think it looks good too, the less pissing around with mechanical front deraileurs the better imo - I would go for it, you can always change it back.

Saying that - only having a few low low gears kinda sucks for anything long and steep and I will change it when I get around to it.

  • Phil might be right let me send you some pics

  • That seat is much too far back for you!

On gearing I second what others have said here, 11-32 is fine for all but the quickest riding in Kent, for me at least with 44 front.

Remember fixed gear! One gear can be enough it's just about speed n effort/efficiency. I think people worry about gearing more than necessary

  • Fwiw I think 46T max will suck a little bit on the fast bits, be just fine for pretty much everything else. 46-32 on the Stayer atm, but the 32 honestly only ever gets used on hills longer than 1 km/steeper than 5%/at the end of a commuting week.
You absolutely ought to try a road fixed someday though!

  • Turns out these Rotor cranks are Track, not road and are not compatible with any road spider I can find.
If anyone would like them I would swap for a Specialized Power Saddle 143mm.
Or a 24mm 165mm crankset (not Shimano, something cool) that I could use instead.
You'd need to find a Track Spider for them to use them though.

If you'd found a spider, you'd have then had the fun of finding out they only work with the Rotor Track BB, and not any old 24mm BB🫠

  • 😅
Well in that case, if anyone has all of those things then feel free to come grab these are they are no use to me!

Still looking for a Spesh Power 143mm. Happy to swap for my Bontrager Aeolus.

  • I've got a 143 power I could swap. The black rails are pretty marked up/silver though

  • Mines a bit marked on the rails too, from thigh rub.
Ever in London? Otherwise depending on where you are I might be able to swing by if I'm doing road riding nearby :)

I could potentially meet you in London one evening. Otherwise you'd only be passing me if you were riding to Brighton
