Klopp always seemed to get pissed off against Burnley. He didn't like opponents being allowed to tackle Liverpool players.

Dyche and Klopp just didn't get on, well Dyche had the last laugh.

This thread would suggest the non Liverpool fans are the angry ones though...?

I'm sure I've seen the insufferable guy he's with in somewhere else, probably football-related.
I feel a bit sad that he's detonated his own career, but what an idiot.

• #172034
Don't know any Liverpool fans, myself included, ranting about this at all.

I’ve seen the Coote video now. I think it’s blown way out of proportion.
He calls Klopp a cunt (not a German cunt) and arrogant. That’s it.
It’s careless to do this to camera when you’re a pseudo- household name, but haven’t we all worked with someone we don’t like (hate) and still kept it professional?
IMO, it’s a leap to formally claim (and as a result take action) that he has officiated - or will officiate - in a partial manner because of someone he doesn’t like.
We can all suspect it might be a problem, but then you’re in a world of trouble when it turns out most officials follow a club in the league which employs them.

This is just a bad take. He does call him a 'German Cunt' (it's mistitled by the auto-subtitles but very clearly audible) and this is what he will be punished for. It's obviously totally unacceptable, considering one of the ref's responsibilities is to look out for and report on any such discriminatory language.
I don't think anyone is formally claiming that he has been partial, and that certainly isn't what will be acted upon.
If you want to be serious about it your final line "we can all suspect it might be a problem" - this may be the most severe damage - it further undermines trust (see also the released VAR audio from the spurs goal vs liverpool last year) in the competency and impartiality of the officials and when conspiracy nonsense is an increasing threat in society at all levels (see our own long-standing member in the US politics thread) this sort of thing is just grist to the mill of conspiracy nuts. Which is unhelpful at best.

I'd agree with this. If Coote had been on the video saying "Yeah, Klopp's a great guy. Was always pleasant to me" no-one would think anything of it. This is just the flip side.
It was very stupid and there should certainly be some form of suspension but it shouldn't be career ending.
This type of stuff is far worse https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XnCdj0q9c2s

Are referees not allowed to hold opinions then? Which is what you seem to be suggesting.
He’ll be punished because he was stupid enough to be filmed expressing those opinions, not because of the opinion itself.
-

I think Barney Ronay gets it right.
Racism.
His "mate" is a tit and set him up.Nothing will come of this, but will people consider how fucking awful if is being a ref? The abuse is insane. Death threats is bonkers.
-
• #172041
Begs the question, why on earth would anyone want to be one?
Drones will be doing it in the near future anyway.
-
• #172042
Because if they weren't there, there wouldn't be a game to watch.
Perhaps people should fucking remember that.If they want football you need refs. Otherwise you have those medieval games of violence.
-
• #172043
There are holding opinions and then there’s what Coote said.
If he’d just said Klopp’s a twat, without mentioning anything about his nationality, he might still be working next week.
-
• #172044
Is calling someone a "German cunt" racism?
They're both the same race, there isn't a power inequality between German and English people.
-
• #172045
Not sure if a reading comprehension fail or a willful misreading of my comment - what did I say that gave you the idea refs aren't allowed to hold opinions? The sole problem I think he will/should be punished for is calling someone a German cunt. If you mean my last point about undermining trust - exactly as you say, I think it's unhelpful to have their opinions broadcast in such crude terms, not that they shouldn't privately hold them.
-
• #172046
it's xenophobia, which if you're going to ref a league full of international players is not a great look.
-
• #172047
Exactly this
-
• #172048
“Fuck me. What’s the point of having you in the middle? What’s the point of having you? Eh? Fuck me, honestly.”
Refereeing is basically a nightmare now, a job that requires you to be
simultaneously a regulation hyper-nerd, super-cool air traffic
controller, long distance runner, font of matey common sense and also
immune to mass abuse and threats of violence.Coote appears accompanied by a beaming and treacherous companion, who
is throughout very clearly loading, cocking and easing Coote’s trigger
finger on to the shotgun pointed at his foot. -

Nothing will come of this, but will people consider how fucking awful if is being a ref?
The PGMOL does themselves zero favours on this front, and the media mobilisation to repeat this statement ("being a ref is awful, poor them" - like in the Ronay article you reference) ignores that there are real problems that should be addressed (how on earth is Oliver getting £20k from the owners of city? That's not going to help the chorus of "the refs are crooked" brigade).

Players have been suspended for saying similar things, and they don't have to have a credible lack of bias.
It's just hard to get over the stupidity of someone who would allow themselves to be filmed:
- breaking lockdown rules (seemingly)
- showing personal animus against a high-profile manager from a team with a penchant for hysteria
- using what is defined in the rules of football as racist terminology
- alongside a prick who is spouting even more contentious shite
It's clear from the video that they planned to send it to a bunch of other people - no matter how drunk you are, you know that's putting c.£200k a year that he's never going to get elsewhere at risk. Guy's a moron.
Anyway, what channel is showing these medieval games of violence?
- breaking lockdown rules (seemingly)
Apparently he's now claiming it's not genuine footage. Looks to me like a night on the gak got out of hand and for whatever reasons he agreed to some 'mock interviews'. Absolute nugget.
