The cones aren’t anything exclusive. Given how pitted that one is I’d expect the cup is shot too, which makes replacement a better option if it’s a customer’s bike.
The shield isn’t built in. You can remove it by:
1- Brace the cone very gently in a vice. You don’t want to clamp the cone, you want to support the shield, as much of it as you can manage, with the flat external surface facing up.
2- Add penetrant oil of choice. Let sit a bit.
3- Using a wooden or plastic mallet, give the cone a whack. If it didn’t budge, you didn’t hit it hard enough. The trick is to knock out the cone without damaging the shield: the key is supporting as much of the shield as possible and hitting the cone squarely.
4- Press fit or gently whack the shield onto new cone if required.

I think I need 3/8"
You need a thread pitch gauge, you can't reliably tell ⅜" threads from 10mm just by measuring the major diameter, and ⅜" could be 24TPI or 26TPI

I can’t recall if they’re the same pitch but you can source cones by buying Weldtite axle assemblies or cheap Shimano MTB hubs online (£5 and £10, respectively).

If you have a bike with a Shimano/Sram/modern Campag rear derailleur, you can unscrew the derailleur from the hanger and try to fit the cone on the exposed bolt. If it fits, it’s M10.

Yes. I used to run a 9spd XT rear derailleur with an 11-34 XT cassette and Ultegra 6703 3x10 shifters (with an Ultegra 6703 30-39-53 triple chainset) and it worked a treat. Deeply unfashionable, with a triple chainset, but it gave an epic gear range.
Perfect for virtually guaranteeing being able to ride up Hardknott and Wrynose on the Fred Whitton, while still being able to hammer the descents and the flats.

Probably ought to ask this in the mechanics section, but what are the longest cable mtb brake levers one can currently buy? Tektro look like they do some fairly long ones.
It’s on a heavy contraption with BB7 mtb calipers re-worked to operate as always on (a sort of dead man’s handle type brake) and Avid Speed Dials to pull them off, but it needs a bit more leverage.

Leverage is about ratio, not absolute length. Try a flat bar road lever, they have greater mechanical advantage than MTB levers.

Good shout. I also want something I can get four fingers round. The Speed Dial levers are two finger levers and we have to hold onto them for about 30 minutes at a time.
[It’s only proving out some tech on a prototype so it’s only got to work a couple of times. We can put up with some dreadful ergonomics as it’s only being used a couple more times]

Hi all, I'm looking for a mudguard extender that would work on SKS mudguards on a 20" wheel. For an e-bike: https://www.winora.com/de-en/p/radius-wran1/ attached is a photo.
Looked at getting an Ass Savers ToeTector or something similar but you have to mount via bolt/zip tie and there is no hole to do this in the current SKS mudguard. Looking at their website, I do not see any compatible extenders: https://www.sks-germany.com/en/productcategories/mudguards/
Any options (other than duct taping a half a coke 2L bottle) would be appreciated

The ebay ones only offer "M8" as a purchase option which I assume is their 5/16". Whereas I think I need 3/8".
