  • Can't give approximates, but in my experience, around half of that of other bikes I do way more mileage on. The drivetrain being so close to the ground seems to attract the worst of muck and grime. That and the fact that it's a commuter, so more rain etc.

  • that makes sense, i wonder if waxing the chain will get a bit more life out of it. the cost is trivial but it seems a waste of material to get through a chain a year

  • Tried. My first foray into waxing (proper wax not emulsion/fluid wax) was with my Brompton chain, because why not? Only took a few slightly wet commutes to wash off. Was using Molten Speed Wax, which is meant to be one of the best (for performance at least lol).

I think unless you're already in a good routine with waxing your other chains, it might not be worth it. I'm currently using Silca's wet lube (Synergetic), more because it's what I have at hand, and does help preserve chain life.

  • For me, waxing only works for bikes that aren’t ridden in the wet. I only use it on my gravel bike as that’s only ridden at weekends. If it’s wet at all then the chain will need to be swapped out afterwards, or at least dried off until it can be swapped.

I do prefer waxing, it makes for a cleaner bike and swapping chains is easy, but it just can’t withstand getting seriously wet. Even more so on a Brompton due to how low the chain is.
