Which Tyres?

  • They will be used with tubes though, hence me asking about how much of a pain they are to fit.

    I don't do road tubeless.

I probably have a 32mm GP5000 around here somewhere but I wanted something thicker and I'm a compulsive tyre swapper so trying a new set seemed like a good idea.

I wish Pro Endurance came in a bigger size.

  • I had the Cinturatos found them really sluggish and unpleasant to ride. I'm currently using some 35mm Specialized S-Works Mondo Tyres. They're much nicer to ride and seem pretty hardy and long lasting. Not horrendous pricing either.

FWIW they were super easy to fit and set up tubeless.

  • Won't use a tubeless road tyre ever with tubes (or without) if there's any other options.
PITA to swap an inner, potentially a pain to seat it back.

  • X2 if it’s a tubeless rim. What an arse ache.

  • I ride Cinturatos tubeless in a 26mm variety, and a 35mm variety, on different bikes. One on Hunt rims, the other on Hope. They're pretty straight forward to set up tubeless, but on the odd occasions I've needed to run with tubes they are a bit tighter to get onto the rim and will not always seat into the rim particularly well giving them a "lumpy" ride. Not a dealbreaker for me as I rarely need to stick a tube in, but probably wouldn't opt for that as default. Otherwise I find their grip and durability/puncture protection excellent, albeit they are not as svelte and lively as some of the more racey tyres.

As an alternative I have just started riding a set of Hutchinson Challengers (the older tubed model) in 30mm and they seem great for the c.200k I've ridden so far. £30 on Amazon at the moment which is pretty good for a modern tyre: https://amzn.eu/d/cxfxsaP

  • I've found this true for GP5000 TL but other TL tyres I've been fine with. I guess it depends what the bead tolerances are like. That's why I was asking - some are horrible, some are fine.

  • Hmm, also a good looking wider option but they're even more spendy than the Pirelli.

    Ever run them with tubes?

  • I agree with the others about not using a tubeless tyre if you're not going to run it tubeless.

I assume you already considered a 32mm Conti 4 season, any reason you don't go for that?

  • No I'm afraid not, I've ditched tubes altogether. At 35mm (38mm on my rims) they work nicely as road tubeless

  • I've had a 4Season I got cheap in my tyre collection for years. I can't bring myself to use it. Makes me a little bit sick in my mouth. :D

I'd probably go for the 32mm GP5000 before one of them, even if the lifespan is half what I'd get out of more of a training tyre.

They're a bit cheaper now, since most tyres are now TL versions.

  • What about Challenge Strada Bianca? Too delicate?

  • Hippy is going to put 4seaons on his crux isnt he

  • GP Urbans? I'm commuting on them and they seem pretty fast but touching wood pretty robust as well.

  • I'm still in shock that @hippy is using Continental tyres.

  • How would you compare to GP5000 All Seasons? Everything is pointing to putting these on (also in 35c) this winter but I'm intrigued by the Mondos.

And yeah agreed, ran Cinturato's last winter and whilst grip was ok, they felt dead to ride.

  • I haven't used GP5000 all seasons so I can only compare to the regular version. The Mondo's are definitely slower. I've not yet tried them on a 'fast' ride to see how they stack up but they haven't felt sluggish on my commutes / long rides.

When I bought the Mondo's they were about £20 a tyre cheaper than the GP 5000 AS ones so that clinched it, if price wasn't an issue I would have gone GP As.

  • You should just use contact Urbans if you want a good reliable tyre with tubes. Yet to puncture mine and it’s been about 3 years. In the lineup of similar tyres they’re light, low rolling resistance and grippy too

  • I used one of them in Transiberica in 2019. Came up skinnier on my rim but I wonder what they'd blow out to on the Spesh wheels. Still probably not as durable as I was looking for but they're at least tubed rather than TL bullshit.

  • Yeah, since being impressed with GP4000s. But then everyone started putting gravel sectors in races and I moved to Pro 4 Endurance for durability (Conti tissue paper sidewalls)

  • Pretty sure I have 50mm Contact Urbans on the Surly. They came with the bike. I've just done 400 and 600k audaxes on them and while they work thought they're maybe a little -too- industrial for the road Crux.

  • Grand Prix Urbans are the ones you want. Basically a thicker GP with the thread design from the Contact Urban.
The ones I had were plenty grippy and didn’t suffer a single puncture with tubes

  • As a self confessed Marathon Supreme fan boy Ive finally admitted defeat in easily laying my hands on them for daily commuting duties.

A recent bike swap required mudguard removal and the discovery that my rear is fairly cut up though not punctured.

I’ve read the last few pages and started taking notes but probably just ended up more confused. I’d been considering trying the Marathon Racer, wondered if anyone has?

Currently riding 700x32 but could do with coming down slightly in size for mudguard clearance on new frame.
