Finally coming out of the end of a move and renovation I'm picking up the raleigh MTB again to build a proper dad bike as we are also expecting.
Looking back at a previous iteration I definitely preferred the look of and trying to work out what makes me like it more
vs
I think I'll go for:
- Better photography
- Silver seat post
- More period appropriate saddle shape (selle turbo?)
- Remove the decals
Need to double check that the derailleur hanger I have actually fits on the bike before I do anything as the longer term plan is to build this up 1 x 7/8/9/10 geared for Brighton hills.
- Better photography

Yeah, top pic looks nicer to me!
So, the derailleur hanger is a bolt/plate type that clamps to the dropout? They’re pretty generic I think.
For gearing reference, I chug around to-and-from the rental near the top of Hanover on a 1x10 that is 44t and 11-36. -

Thanks, had thought I'd end up with a lower tooth count on the chain ring than that but I don't really understand gearing to be honest. Good to know that range works though!
Yeah it's a bolt on/clamp on hanger - I couldn't work out how to get it on last time I looked at it but hopefully I'll have a eureka moment if I spend a bit more time on it!

Aye. I like to mash a biggish gear. 36t and 42t with the 11-36 also worked for me on other bikes at other times.
The small semi-circular plate fits in the recess on the inner face of the dropout. It seems completely insubstantial for supporting a rear derailleur, but once it’s all together with a wheel, it’s fine!
If you’re seeking any drivetrain parts, let me know. I haz sparez in the trashmound : /

oh nice on thanks! I was trying to get it on the outer face of the dropout. You'll probably receive a PM once I've worked that out.

You dont want to hear this but the cantis also look far better than the Vs...
-
• #58
goddamnit I think you're right!

Worked out how to mount the derailleur hanger!
Picked up some high rise bars from @sacredhart, got 9 speed deore shifter and rear derailleur in the post from @Josh and picked up a 9 speed wheelset from marketplace so we're all systems go!
One small problem at the mo; the wheels I've picked up take presta valves and I have a bunch of schrader valves tubes - is it a terrible idea to just drill the hole out a little? Or should I just buy presta valve 26" tubes...

Drilling is more than fine....go ahead super star.

Work in progress:
Needs saddle angle sorted, longer front brake cable outer and chain fitted.
The rear wheel is pretty close to the end of the drop out when the wheel is centred between the chain stays but it's still IN the dropout so I think this is fine?
This is because the derailleur hanger prevents the drive side of the wheel going any further back in the drop out

I'm also struggling to get the brakes pads to meet the braking surface; I think the rims on these wheels must be a lot narrower than previous. I'm guessing I can just move some of the spacers/washers to the wheel side of the brake mount

Sitting so far forward in the drop out means the tyres now have too small a clearance between the chainstays. I'm hoping Billy bonkers in 2.1" will measure narrower than these panaracer smoke/dart in 2.1"

Or maybe continental double fighters in 1.9 just to be safe!

Now I've got a chainline issue I need to fix, shifts nicely but drops off the chain wheel in lowest gear.
edit: got pics to work

Best fix would probably be a narrower bottom bracket but I don't even know where to start with this one!
(other than taking a spanner to this I guess?)

I have no idea how to get this bb out. The nut doesn't appear to be threaded on to hold it together and there's nothing to grip on to on the outer face to see if they'll come undone...

Long time since I've updated here - baby and house refurb seem to get in the way of unnecessary fiddling with bikes but have sold the holdsworth and made a few changes.
My girlfriends Raleigh Wisp got the swept back bars from the Holdsworth, the 1 x 10 and grips from the Raleigh MTB, and a set of bluemels from my road bike

And the Raleigh MTB got some new deathgrips and is now 1 x 12

Trying to shift the underused raleigh to make room for an imminent house move: https://www.lfgss.com/conversations/378189/#comment16620288
