  • Honestly, it’s seems rock solid. Quite pleased with myself.
I’ve pressed on it as hard as I could with my thumbs and it didn’t budge. I put a bolt in and used a hex key to put a bit of leverage on and it didn’t snap off…
Not my neatest work but cheaper than a new fork or paying some specialist who would have probably done the same thing!

  • I’m now wondering about the house looking for to see what else I could use the JB Weld on.

  • What are the current forum fave drop bar brake leavers?

As far as I know, the forum favours levers.

  • TBF there have been a number of leavers which overall favoured the forum.

  • But seriously. What do you use to brake on compact drop bars?

  • TRP RRL or Shimano 6870 di2 shifters, remove the buttons if you care

  • 11s era campagnolo, rip the shifting stuff out.

  • Thank you

I watched the whole thing and enjoyed it

  • What do you use to brake on compact drop bars?

I'm still on SRAM S500 but it's a personal taste thing so the Tektro/Shimano/Campag fans' opinions have equal value. To answer the original question, there is no "forum fave" because at least four different patterns each attract a significant number of users.

  • Condor or tektro rl340 levers. Currently £11 from temple cycles. Quite like Shimano rx100 levers too.

  • What term describes these old brake levers? I want to flog them on eBay and I can't think for myself. Thank you.

  • If they can actually supplement other brake levers then 'Auxiliary' has been used in the past.
If they're stand alone levers I'd stay away from that term and "Crosstop"
They're just flat bar levers otherwise.

  • Thanks all. Cross top is what I am after.

  • Those levers are a very French thing, found on randonneurs and campeurs. I don’t know if the original intention was this, but they allow you to completely pack around the front of the bars on a rack and with a bar bag in the middle and still have access to pull the brakes 👍

  • That's very helpful, thanks

  • These specific ones are callet guidonnet. Dia Compe makes them, you kind of need old school rando bars though, like Nitto noodle.

  • I cycled through deep water, well over my bottom bracket and hubs.
What should I do to make sure there's no trapped water? Or just not worry about it?

  • Or just run with “cool fixie Hoxton single gear brakless levers”
I saw someone the other day with bars cut to about 20cm, no grips, and these crosstops the wrong way round, facing inwards

Took my BB off, didn't find any water, it should drain really, maybe just check the drain holes are not blocked. I did find small amounts of surface rust inside some of the bolt holes, like bottle cage, lower pannier mounts, etc. so took them off, cleaned and put back in with a good dose of grease.

  • What’s the most effective way to clean windows for a streak-free finish?

I’ve been doing it with vinegar/some wanky ‘natural’ spray thing and blue paper roll, but the streakiness/cloudiness returns after a day or so…

  • HG window cleaner concentrate

  • You should have said hi. ;)
