  • useful for things in tight spaces

A ratchet T-handle is a good thing to have in your arsenal for tight spots, e.g.

  • Well, there you go. Cheaper than I was expecting, thanks guys.

While we're here, what about drill sets for same kind of materials. There's quite a few presto sets on that site. Any better than others? Have had lots of bad experiences with cheap drill bits.

  • what about drill sets

  • Laughed too loud and woke the wife!
No idea how to explain the awakening to her 😂😂😂

  • I stayed out with a fairly cheap Bosch (I think) set and have just replaced as required.

For replacements I like Heller as you get a pack of ten of the smaller sizes for a decent price.

  • Dormer and Würth.
The latter because they were 'free'.

  • but, has any wizard got a sharpening method that doesn't involve a workshop or degree in engineering

  • If you have a bench grinder I have this ……free……in SE27. In fact I think I have 3 free

  • ace offer, but a bench grinder will be a touch too conspicuous in the flat

  • Invest in a box of Dormer jobber drills and you’ll never look back. Get the black ones if you use a battery drill, not the A002 ones. Those ones are fine in pillar drills etc, but the tips chip easily and the shanks are very soft.

  • Consulting the latest, (March '24) Orbital Fasteners catalogue,
page 268 lists both the A108 Dormer Jobber drill bits,
(one up from the standard A002),
and also the next level up, A777, 8% Cobalt drill bits, (especially good for stainless steel).

  • Every tap set I've used has had limited life on a good cutting action. They are essentially consumables so just buy cheap and replace as needed.

  • And use cutting fluid

  • Micrometer day, 25-50mm Mitutoyo added to the collection, but more interesting is digging out father's tool box to get my hands on this 1940s Goodell Pratt 0-1"

Another heritage find, this table from a 1940s Intal drill and tap catalogue

  • So all you need is milk and rape seed oil. So oat milk or soy;)

  • Neatsfoot oil

Discontinued shortly after Abe Simpson's turlet went into production?

  • Milk!

  • Guess it’s just water soluble oil / fat

  • Whilst staying in a Swiss mountain cabin last weekend, I found this strange looking tool in the toolbox. It's a sharpened, scalloped chisel with two channels, each of which has some rasp-like texture. Only mark I could see was "2 1/2". No idea what it is for, but it's definitely a porn worthy tool.

  • Could it be for splitting fire wood into kindling?

  • oh great we all want one now

  • Which firm is the Knipex/Wera/Festool for bolster/chisels?

  • think I get the joke there, but given the above image I bet there is an answer - or at least a personal preferred size model that is the goto..
As it goes a few weeks ago I was looking at a carpet tucker as [another] useful tool - same family different jacket
