Mudguards

  • To be fair, I've not done 26" with knobblys either! Probably just needs a bit more clearance. Is it worth going a size up for better coverage with bigger clearance?

  • Whilst I'm here, is there anything worth looking at other than Bleumels to cover 700x42c slicks? I've had multiple Bleumels in the past and haven't had any problems with them at all but like to try new things.
Plastic preferred and not mega expensive.

  • You know what I'll get some proper measurements and photos posted.

It's a bit odd as it's the seat stay clearance width which is the problem point...something I've not seen before.

  • I guess you could make a cutout in the Bleumels for the seat stays?

  • Can anyone recommend guards where the front one attaches to the underside of the fork, rather than the back of it... does that even make sense?!

  • Any mudguard can attach this way. If the fork has a dedicated eyelet to attach to use that, if not, use a daruma bolt.

  • Recommendation wise, I like velo orange guards.

  • Right!

So tyre width is 55mm. Clearance on the front and rear is about ~25mm.
Didn't measure the chainstays but there's a reasonable amount.

This is what I mean about little clearance left/right of the tyre on the seat stay. I need to dish the wheel over to the left by a couple of mm as it's currently rubbing. In my head I imagine the mudguard floating above it. I'm not after the no-gap look.

Another fucker is I have a mini v on the front with fuck all straddle(?) cable clearance, so I guess I just stop it short or hack it off.

I could swap for a canti, but fuck me it's bad enough having one on the back.

  • Don't suppose anyone knows what this approx height measurement is on sks Bluemels - marked in red?

    Cheers

  • It's not too challenging but getting the guard centered and stopping any rubbing takes on an added dimension because of the knobbles. Here they are on my Rockhopper - the rear wheel is slightly off-true and it's run singlespeed, so whenever I stand on the pedals I occasionally get a bit of rubbing. Otherwise it's just fine!
I've got a new fork with a lower a-c since this picture, so the front guard occasionally rubs too, but never enough to cause consternation.

  • Just from your picture you're right on the cusp of not enough room on the front. Downsizing your tyres just a bit would give you plenty of room - I've done several 26" mudguards that go under v-brakes no problem.

Also, I'd throw my recommendation behind SKS 26" 65mm:

  • Yeah.... Logic says go back to the old tyres. But they're shit and these are nice. I should really buy new 1.75" and a set of full sized V brakes and levers. But I'm trying to keep it to a budget as, while I like the bike and it serves a purpose, at some point I'd like something a bit larger with discs.

I've got another bike with the same mini-v front /can'ti-rear combo so I think I'm going to swap a cantilever brake over onto the front...

....Just need to find a straddle cable and time to do it.

  • I hear you - next upgrade cycle maybe?

  • mudguard width question: looking to fit the SKS Edge AL (as inspired by @dbr ). On to my Dolan which takes up at 700x45c (according to the site). I've got 40c with tread and there is still fair clearance. Fork

I want to fit the largest guards possible as to future proof myself so two questions for the hive mind.

    1. If a frame should clear 700x45 - stands to reason it should fit the 56 version (that are specced to 38-50 mm)
    2. is there a disadvantage to having guards that are much large than the wheels (e.g. if I decided to run a wheel set with 32c slicks) other than aesthetics?

    TIA as always

  • Aesthetics is all that matters!

  • Less glib answer.

    1. Measure between the seat stays, chain stays, and fork legs, roughly where the guards would sit, then you'll know what width to get.
Rough guide is guards to be 10mm (at least) wider than your tyres.
    2. If you can fit bigger tyres why would you need/want to fit 32s? Just run some bigger slicks.
  • If you can fit bigger tyres why would you need/want to fit 32s?

    Facts.

  • haha I appreciated both answers. I think I'm going to go with the 56 guards. I'd rather have to fettle around the chain stays and have a bit more breathing room all round. Nothing worse then the eternal battle for close fitting guards and "the slight rubbing noise".

  • If you can fit bigger tyres why would you need/want to fit 32s?

Because I’m light enough that a substantially bigger tire would mostly add weight and friction with little cushioning or speed benefit.

  • If this gets anyone excited, will write down the parts list..

  • I like that a LOT. Solved the rear light on sewtpost / saddlebag in the way issue.

    Parts list most welcome

  • Yes please!

  • Is it just a Go Pro mount bolted on?

  • What are the mudguards?

  • I love stuff like this. Glad this is working out for you!!
