• re mouthing/biting:
bailey did it to everyone in our house. We particularly didn't like it with our youngest, the yelping didn't work (else squeaky toys wouldn't be a thing right?). lots of standing up turning away and firm no seemed to. got Bailey into the right habits early on and now she gets bossed around by N rather than the other way around. The older people tolerated it a bit more but set boundaries.

Bailey used to go batshit before needing a shit, jumping up, nipping, all sorts. That passed.
gets super excited at the moment after throwing and fetching (i'm not going to call it retrieving, it's not that yet) so I let her hold on to the big stick she's been chasing or if she's on the lead let her put that in her mouth. and then calmness prevails.

Until a fox poo appears on the walk.

  • Yeah, as you'll have gathered from the range of responses on here, dogs are all different and some things will work for some dogs and for others they'll just have to grow out of it. Try to be consistent where you can (this is def key in all aspects of dog training) but also find things that work for you where possible and keep in mind that they are just a puppy, it will pass and get much better soon.

  • Welcome Margot! So cute.

  • She's tiny. Looks about 6 weeks old but gorgeous.

    Congratulations .

Edit: cheers for the advice all, I think I need to vent as much as anything. We definitely get the mental behaviour before shits, sleeps, feeds. Trying to be consistent with 2 kids "helping" has been a challenge.

And he won't chase anything let along fetch or retrieve. Weirdest spaniel I've ever seen.

  • how old are they?

  • You've got plenty time to work on that, spaniels are great and train really well.

  • He'll soon stop chewing your arm, but will probably transfer his teeth to the furniture, timber kitchen tables are particularly popular.

Retrieving and chasing will happen. Never worry about starting a spaniel, worry about stopping them. Recall is everything!

  • Margot is 8 weeks old but is quite undersized. We “rescued” her from a relative with a chaotic home situation and were prepared for a bit of extra care and love being needed but man… wasn’t ready for this. She’s *tiny. So utterly vulnerable. She is also crawling with fleas, worms and has bad diarrhoea. I was up all night with her pooping every 45 mins. today we’ve taken her to the vets for jabs, flea and worm treatments and general reassurance but we’re both pretty stressed out that she’s not gonna make it. She was such a sweet and good girl on her first night home and today she just seems sad and quiet. Trying to keep the kids away from her to let her rest and the medication to kick in. Poor little mite.

  • You're doing such a great thing I hope she'll be ok. She looks tiny but hopefully with your love and care and help from the vet she'll grow stronger.

  • Ha he's tried the kitchen table but as I built it every time I hear a scrape he gets pulled right off.

  • Remind me to come scrape your table.

  • 7 generations of labs, 2 of cockers....

  • I suddenly feel lucky Dolly only occasionally steals my socks now.

  • These are amazing, by the way! You say cheap Amazon ring flash - presumably also a decent camera involved somewhere too?

  • Thank you - it is a reasonably decent Sony dlsr, but I think I mostly just got lucky with light from the window balancing out the flash. I doubt I could repeat it.
Plus photogenic dog obviously, but I can't claim any credit for that.

Margot looks great. What breed is she?

  • We are going in to week 3 with Shadow. She’s settled really well, last night was the first night she spent the full night in H’s room, achieved simply by closing our door. Bond is growing between the two of them slowly but inline with my expected trajectory.

Her recall is great on the long lead and her following and checking in on me whilst walking on it is good. Not sure when I’ll feel comfortable taking her off lead mind. It amazes me how different she behaves on different leads and different modes.

Settling well at cafes etc. She starts public access proper this week with me, so fingers crossed that goes smoothly. Be interesting to see how many questions I’ll be fielding once she starts working properly.

  • Can't answer for Margot - that's @Dooks-Fatberg's dog. Mine is Owen, destroyer of tables, he's a deerhound lurcher.

  • Sorry, that was a poorly formatted attempt to reply to two messages at once.

Ada's best friend is a lurcher which has given her excellent (for a staffy) chasing skills when it comes to playing with other dogs.

  • Margot the 9 week old terrier/cocker “rescue” pup had flea treatment on tues and I’m combing her multiple times a day. Concerned that I’m still getting live fleas off her - if significant fewer than the first 48 hours. She’s absolutely filthy and the amount of dried blood, eggs, dead and live fleas and their black filth that is still coming out of her coat is heartbreaking. I really want to bathe her but guidance says no flea bath until 12 weeks and the treatment said no bath for a week after… what do we think? Are there any 9 week old puppy safe flea shampoos? Can I take her back for a re-up of flea treatment? I’m guessing not.

In positive news, Margot is starting to come to life and I’m no longer worried she’s gonna die in the night. She’s eating, sleeping and pooping better and has started to play and cause mischief. She is already a very different animal to the tiny weak thing that arrived 4 days ago.

In unbelievably horrific news, the chaotic alcoholic relative we “rescued” Margot from on Monday, was found dead on Wednesday. We don’t know what happened but really hoping the transaction didn’t play a part. My wife is in bits with a mess of emotions… and dealing with a poorly, smelly and flea-ridden pup whilst processing that isn’t making today easier.

    Fuckinell

  • Fuckinell indeed mate. Sending whatever a stranger on an internet forum can send by way of commiseration and love in such situations.

  • Flipping heck, that's a lot to cope with.

  • Thanks, really not fishing for sympathy… well maybe a bit on behalf of those who knew and loved him. I only met him briefly at our wedding 12 years ago. Have come home from work to provide morale support. Current situation:
