  • My mum and dad got divorced when I was 3.

We saw him sporadically during most of the year, but often went to stay with him in the summer holidays. He was always very nice to us and got on well with my mum when they spoke. If he had any trouble, he would speak to her about it.

We knew he was a bit dodgy at times, with business deals and likely some association with the Malaysian/Chinese mafia, not that he was a member, but that he dealt with them, you had to to grease the wheels so to speak.

We never spoke about why they broke up when we were younger. Mum would never say a bad word about him really.

It was only when I was in my thirties did my dad confess that the reason they broke up was because he became a heroin addict.

  • And I'm not blaming anyone for becoming addicted to booze/drugs/sex/whatever, thankfully we know the neuro triggers for this kind of stuff now so we can do more to help. BITD I would consider you a total waste of space if you got hooked on smack, totally not fucking cool at all in any of my circles.

We all did drugs but for the most part we didn't go too deep, some did and got burnt and I'm ashamed to say that at times I didn't have too much sympathy for them, we all knew we were playing with fire so you had to take it on the chin and deal with it yourself if it got the better of you. Bit callous looking back.

I saw a couple of people get totally fucked up when I was around 16, one was a quite well off young lad, mum and dad bought him a mansion flat in Clapham when he was 18, within a year he'd sold every stick of furniture and belonging and was renting himself at Piccadilly tube station to get his fix, it was brutal. It was the best life lesson ever.

I started smoking weed at 14 and was already sick of taking LSD by the time I was 18. It all escalated very quickly but I always avoided smack (I'm not counting the opiated black hash we used to get for special occasions).

But now we know it's a disease, I've got it to a degree, I'm lucky I saw the things I did when I did and got turned off going down that path. It could've very easily been me.

  • Wow, tough break!

  • Wasn't it a lot more straightforward when everyone's parents were just barely functioning alcoholics?

  • My parents weren't that, but I've made the mistake of living with a couple of them. The answer is "No, that's not funny and the fact you think it is provides a demonstration of part of the problem".

  • Meanwhile, the Trump family want to get into crypto but it hasn't gone well.

  • Grifters gonna grift.

  • Trump sentencing kicked down the road. Inevitable, I suppose. But it is disappointing.

  • Almost the entire constellation of related events around that incompetent idiot of a sleazy crime boss is thoroughly disappointing, particularly his apparent lifetime supply of free passes to get away with absolutely anything.

  • You'd think after 8+ years this would have sunk in, but my mind is still boggled by the fact that Trump is polling at 48% of the electorate.

It's going to be so, so close.

  • Live debate could move the needle a bit?

But like that article says - his core supporters are going nowhere.

  • Yep, I'm still hopeful that Kamala can shift enough of the undecided or wavering voters to eek out a win, but I'm just continually amazed that that many people back Trump. So weird.

  • Bewildering, isn't it? Just reading transcripts of his rallies make me feel like I'm losing my mind.

  • getting rid of the brain addled elderly bloke ? hopefully

  • If Trump pulls out and the ticket becomes JD Vance and RFJ Jr... the nutjob and the brainworm guy

  • Just reading transcripts of his rallies make me feel like I'm losing my mind.

And without a mind you would vote for Trump, that's how it works.

  • Glad the most influential woman in US politics did a good thing yesterday.

    #taytay

  • Given that Trump had been firing off AI-generated deepfake photos of her, I reckoned it was only a matter of time before she put her head above the parapet. And she is, as she pointed out, a childless cat lady after all.

  • I don’t know who came up with the bait and switch strategy idea for Harris to run with in the tv debate, but it sure as hell worked.

  • Not that I stayed up to watch it, but he was on the 'immigrants will eat your cats/babies are being executed post-birth' tip and the immediate polls still show 40% think he won the debate.

  • Best comment I’ve seen so far:

“He calls her a Marxist but she’s not the one getting publicly owned.”

  • They'd tick that box even if he had a coronary and died 30 seconds in.

Did I read somewhere that even the Fox News panel thought he'd lost though, overwhelmingly so?

  • I thought I’d watch some fox coverage just to see outside of my echo chamber. Despite their commentators implying that Trump had lost the debate there was a Fox News poll for their viewers, 92% thought Trump won, 4 % Harris and 4% unsure.

Time and time again it appears the Trump cult members can’t accept reality at all.
