  • My Secan basically maxed out the space with 60mm guards for 650b. I managed to fit 47mm Gravelkings on a 30mm id rim, but the 50 mm cinturatos rubbed instantly. I reckon, as others said, that 47mm might be the best shot for some clearance

  • Terrible photo, but this is 2.1” Teravail Rutland on 25 mm internal rim. Yes there technically is space but I think guards would be a challenge.

  • Winter is coming and want to tune the Faran to be more winter road bike. 35c tyres are fitted and some nice metal PDW guards arrived to wrap around them.

    For a moment, I was genuinely excited to be fitting these. Have only worked with SKS plastics, many fond memories screaming at the fiddly stays and all the cutting required, the best of times.

    These look neat and the little cartoon booklet eased the mind.

    Somewhat short lived, there is a lot to like but on the rear of the Faran, they are close but no cigar. To avoid turning to the dark side and breaking stuff, they are on but there are questions and a round 2 is needed.

    '1. Not flush at the bottom, I could file a thick plastic washer to an angle or are there other washer options for guards? Maybe this is OK?
    '2. Borrowed a floor vice from the spiders and applied some bendinium to the stock hanger but it doesn't work, can't access the bolt to get the fit right.

    Would you create something with some drilium and washers which would look very neat but is there a risk of cracking? Suck it up and buy the official part?

  • Looks neato! So:
    1) if you have SKS guards they supply some serrated plastic washers that are great for tricky angles as they have some flex. I imagine SJS cycles will have some, if not holler and I’ll post you a few.
    2) just like Velo Orange/Honjo/Berthoud I think you should be fine to drill through the guard and bolt through with a spacer in between. I think @pish has done something similar.
    3) maybe with an M5 bolt for future-proofing/accommodating a dynamo light attachment?

  • Ah yeah, those bikes are definitely designed for drilled guards, and they look so much neater too. No bright silver clamp standing out against black mudguard.
    Fwiw, that hole is a little vulnerable to cracking/damage from rattling so centre punch, then sharp drill, loctite on the bolt and then you can get a reinforcing plate to go inside the mudguard, works a treat. Sorry to teach you to suck eggs!

  • Looks great, which Exposure light mount is that? I fudged one onto the stay mount but would prefer it higher up and less exposed like yours.

    This is greatly appreciated and helpful! I may spanner my bikes but the state of my floor vice is a great indicator of my general workshop skills :)

  • Looks like a great winter setup to me. Running same tyres and have been happy with the over the last three winters in both 32 and 35mm variety

  • For the misaligned CS bridge/washer issue, I'd use cup+cone/CS washers from V-brake pads in that situation. They'll bridge the gap nicely.

    Never thought the SKS bluemels were noisy but 100km down and this bike is now stealth bomber quiet BUT after a month on the sweet carbon road bike, it feels feels all wrong. Side by side the bottom of the drops was at the top of my road bars, have started to move everything and it feels much better already.

    As a certified member of the no-slam don't cut that steerer down club, time to look at some slopey stems.

    Feeling the glossy s-works SL and -12 are going to suit the build best but the Deda is cheap..

  • Fairlight's official* fitting guide for the PDW's on the Strael is to drill the rear guard and direct mount. One of their recent insta posts shows some spacers they've made up to mount the guards with.

    Mounting the light on the rear fender is a cool idea. It would be neat if you could combine the light mount with the little bracket that holds the arms for the mudguards (shit terminology, sorry), save drilling new holes.

    Ref please? Fwiw I drilled and direct-mounted SKS guard using the supplied spacers, but they are a poor little things, no more than plastic washers. I also had to ask Fairlight for some matching fixing bolts in place of the clumsy SKS items.

    Hive mind on point, this is so close, the bolt holes are aligned but it's M3 hardware.
    Drilling the holes to M5 would be easy but need to remove some of the mount to clear a larger bolt head.

    I recon a pillar drill might do the job, will message some people who might own one..

    The angle is key, something around -12 affords 10mm more stack to be saved from the chopper

  • I've got a spare specialized multi stem that has adjustable angles of you want to try some options?
    I'll have to dig it out of the shed and see if I've got all the bits still.

  • I think you need to make friends with someone that has access to a mill. If you succeed in doing this job with a pillar drill, you should buy yourself a lottery ticket the same day.
