  • They’re Chordata so yeah fish “like” but get fucked.

  • No, I thought that was a terrible clue; not "fish like" (amphibious would have been better) not "finally" in any meaningful sense; and certainly not "commercial".

  • Spoiler (click) Finally caught is the t Commercial is the ad Fishing gear is the pole T ad pole
  • SPOILER sorry

Probably OK this late in the day. Probably.

  • Almost certainly fine.

  • Yeah it made sense but it’s a fucking frog life massage for fucks sake.

  • Opens the debate for philosophy students to step in.
    “Is it a frog?”
“If a tadpole is fishlike, will a frog fall in the woods”

  • Id suggest to watch the video as it explains it all. Ive learnt just from thr videos

  • Oh ffs

    I'm sorry.

    I knew I shouldn't have done that.

    Won't happen again.

  • A tadpole is definitely fish-like.

It swims in water with a tail.

    It's fish-like.

There was a whole thread of bikes that look like fish on here once.

They were fish-like, but not fish.

  • It’s quite baffling how they only need to do one clue a day, but they can’t get every element right every time. This is a very good clue apart from ‘fish-like’, which doesn’t really work and wouldn’t pass muster in any of the UK broadsheets’ daily crosswords. Araucaria would be spinning in his grave at that.

  • Fuck off.
It’s a developmental stage of the final form.
It has external gills and legs.

  • Are beavers fish like?

  • What about tigers?

  • Both swim in the water and have tails.

  • Yeah I’ve got to say fish-like was the only clunker here. It’s like the setter didn’t know what they were so google image-searched them.

  • Worked for me, what can I say?

Maybe amphibious would be better but loses some of the symmetry of the clue.

    Cryptic, innit?

(A recent CtC Friday video featured "Offer?" as a definition for the solution "Assassin". Apparently that is a classic clue. I don't think that a tadpole being fish-like is a greater stretch than that.

Also "grounds worker" for "barista" in the same puzzle. Ditto.)

  • Coffee grounds.
How does the assassin one work?

  • Oh. One who “offs” haha

  • 1 under this morning. Got it on one half of the clue, the other half makes nonsense to me whatsoever

  • Have you watched the video explainer? I was the same, but the solution is quite satisfying and I'd love to solve something like that one of these days

  • One under, haven’t seen this kind of clue for a while, suddenly clicked!
At first I went through all the ends of the worlds (final four letters of each planet) and chuckled when I got to Uranus.

  • I am avoiding them, because the guy is annoying

  • He is very annoying.

If you want a typed explanation click below.

Spoiler explanation The word play indicator is "ends". Since it is plural you are looking at the letters that end a number of words, in this case the four preceding it. Those ending letters spell out F E E D
