Hive Mind - is there such a thing as a useable daily EV which doesn't rely on an iPad in the dash to control it, require a specific smartphone app , or any other such technology bullshit?
Something like a Citroen Ami that could do 150mile round trip commutes 3 days a week?

Someone on my street has installed an outdoor 3 pin socket with waterproofed locking covers and just run a plastic cable cover across the pavement to granny charge their BMW (of course!) all day every day as far as I can tell.
Report it to the local council as a trip hazard each time you see it. They'll do something about it eventually.

Yep, drive somewhere. Park at a charger for a bit of a top up and free parking. Looks like authorities are slowly catching on and removing some of those freebies that EVs have though.
That's our plan if we ever get a car again (which will probably be an EV). There's a bunch of charging places within 400 yards of us and it's easy for me to do the logistics as I work from home. Drive up, set to charge, walk back home to work, monitor charging status, walk back and collect car when mostly done and park it up outside home.
With it just being used for 5-30 mile journeys most of the time (where public transport is not available or would take hours) it would only need charging every few weeks.
Having an EV won't make me drive more. When we had a car I still always walked to the local shops, it never occurred to me to drive. If we wanted a big supermarket shop we arranged a delivery (again, WFH helps in this regard).
Also helps that there's very little parking contention where we live, a few roads away and it is carnage.

I use a Keith Michaels insurance brokers and have done for about 20 years. Went with them when I got my 2001 Impreza and have always found me a good insurance deal.
At the Mini garage this afternoon looking at changing our mini cooper, had about 5 minis so far (long story).
Last 6 years or so been looking at an electric Mini but ICE always been a lot cheaper. Let’s see what they come up with this afternoon.

What if someone parks in your space?
-
• #1957
With the right cable you've got about 3 or 4 parking spaces leeway each side.
(I walked past a car last night charging from one of the lamp post chargers and the cable ran in the gutter past 4 cars to get to the car that was being charged.)

You are legally allowed to lentil their tyres and D lock the wing mirrors off..

I've been offered a lift by people who live closer than us to our local pub, 0.5mi away.

Granny charging that way is shite. With a proper charge point you can plug in before bed and it's charged by the morning so no trailing over the pavement during the day.

EV minis are awful value for money. You’d be insane to buy one given the market for Evs right now

Also found out today thay the EV mini is made in China, didn't get one........

My dad just took advantage of the ULEZ scrappage scheme, scrapped his diesel car with auto gear box issues and put it towards a 30kw Nissan Leaf. 7 years old, 50k miles, £5000. He absolutely loves it!
-
• #1964
How much did your dad get for his diesel shitbox? What kind of range does the Leaf achieve?
-
• #1965
They have just stopped making the Nissan Leaf and you can get them virtually half price as dealers clear stock

But it's only the relatively rich that buy the electric cars and it seems mostly so they can drive into places with LEZ rules. So, you've got the same amount of cars which means the people still driving internal combustion cars are still pumping out the same old shite coz they're stuck in the same traffic as always because there's no attempt to reduce car journeys. Like, where's my subsidy for an e-bike instead of car ffs? Why am I dodgy cables on MY footpaths now? It's just shifted some of the problem.
Has been a measurable improvement in air quality due to electric car use?

Leaf is £29k here... Are Nissan selling them for £15k somewhere?

Seems fair

He got £250 for the scrapping, and £2000 for the ulez scrappage grant so £2250 in total. I think he was expecting to have to change the gearbox for about £1000, along with a variety of other electrical gremlins.
The Leaf has around 90-100 miles general range in 30kw flavour. Which is more than fine for town driving, but can’t make a return trip from Southampton to London.
Seems really solidly built and the tekna version we got was quite high spec, with satnav, 360 cameras, heated front and rear seats, heated steering wheel, Bose sound system. Decent size boot. Bit fugly, but looks like it will be a great town car.
For dad, who’s retired, the insurance increased a bit, but savings in road tax, diesel, occasional ulez costs and repairs will mean he will have broken even in about a year.

On Carwow they are £17k from dealers up north and some guy said he has seen one for £13k cash

We got £2k for our shitty S-max that was worth about a grand. Donated it to Ukraine where it's probably assisting the counter-invasion of Russia.

Ha!
I did the same thing with a parts donor Volvo XC70; it got loaded full of drone parts and medical kit then driven to Kyiv to be murdered out in matt green and used as a drone operators’ vehicle on the front line.

Wow. How did you get the update?

Kind of pissed I didn't change the registration of our car to my parents address. Might have got more than the £151 from webuyanycar

Metal scrap value is usually way more than that. I got £250 from a scrappy (Redcorn) for a 2001 Citroen Saxo 1.1i a few years ago.
