  • the hostile environment

There are at least 2 classes of immigrants, one who would call themselves 'economic' migrant and vulnerable migrant like an asylum seeker.

In the early tory days (Cameron with May) the hostile environment extended to economic migrants which from what I see is something labour wants to move away from for obvious reasons but keep it hostile for the 'other' kind of migrant.

Both terrible, there should not be an openly hostile immigration policy from a country with shrinking economy and population AT ALL but I see their scaling back of hostility for the 'right kind' (🤢) of migrant as improvement.

What I can say just in terms of just competency that a Corbyn gov would have handled it much worse, they have/had no concept of 'balance'. Look at recent NIMBY-ism from rebecca long-bailey for example.

  • we agree here,

just think it's impossible to get the people who are anti immigration to care about that distinction in a way which makes people safer; withdraws motivation for labour not to just ramp up the anti immigration rhetoric when they see a threat around elections. we see this in the states currently with trumps first run vs second run and how biden embracing republican border policy whole hog has only normalised it and allowed trump to go further. even if they do not win electorally they win politically and ideologically.

  • biden embracing republican border policy

This is also mad, when Harris went to Guatemala and said "Do not come to US" was also a jaw-dropping moment.

The left needs change of narrative on immigration.

America is a mad place though, Greg Abbott was sending migrants on busses to NY and other "liberal" places 🤯

  • The best thing would be to get the topic out of the news, then people stop caring about it.
Probably impossible with the current press.
