The men being given prison sentences for rioting that were living in council houses are very likely to be living with their family, since single men are way down a very long list, so if you kick them out you also make a family homeless. The punishment is the prison sentence.

And if a mortgage person's family can't afford to pay the mortgage and become homeless, is that fair?

What if they are renting on the open market..housing benefit won't pay nor universal credit.

You're right, when one member of a family goes to prison the rest of the family often suffers. Kids with a dad in prison tend to have worse outcomes than those without. We should try and support those families and not actively make it worse.
