I’m only dragging stuff back from my distant memory

  • Woke up and before breakfast showed them the video above and immediately after watching they wanted to try to to do a rail stand and then drop onto the board. Which they did but they weren’t wearing any shoes so the grip tape scratched their toes.
I’m still taking that as a win!
They’ve seen kids doing versions of a monster walk (mostly to change direction) they themselves are pretty good at tacking so think the tricks in there show them what they can do and are achievable at their age and with the progress they’ve made so far, aren’t as daunting.

  • Lucky. Sport-wise all I have to drag up is trauma.

  • Did something similar with gripped deck minus hardware doing mini shoveits on the living room carpet. Proper podiatry session.

  • I learnt to kick flip in the lounge, on a board without wheels. Not that I condone that sort of behaviour.

  • I’ve been teaching my son & his mate all the grab positions and getting them to crouch down and do them as they skate along while shouting BEND ZE KNEES!

It teaches them to balance in strange positions and where their centre of gravity can and can’t be.

From that they can get hand airs or those old school street plant 180 slide things

  • Ok when we doing a forum skateday then...

    Closed Paris streets…

    “Broke down” riiiight.

  • Yeah I'm up for this

  • Managed to jar my shoulder falling over yesterday at Brixton trying to roll down one of the gentler windier sections into the bowls. Lot of discomfort in my shoulder upper arm, and didn’t get much sleep last night.
But feel like I’ve got to challenge myself every so often otherwise my progress is a gentle incline, not going to learn a lot by just doing the same few things over and over
Taking jnr to Crystal Palace today to see what’s that is like, not looking forward to having to carry pads, boards and associated kids stuff today.

  • Not a fan of Crystal Palace, feels a bit disjointed, if you’ve got the skills for the bowls all well and good, if you don’t there isn’t much to do at the junior level. Lots of green space around which with a little investment could create a Brixtonesque space suited to various abilities and styles with more space to just roll around and figure shit out..

  • Take it easy.
In my early 40s I was skating a fair amount with the middle age shred lot. There were a fair amount of injuries had (I broke my wrist twice). When you get out of your twenties you shatter like glass

It’s one of the reasons I started cycling more

  • I hear you, was especially galling as it wasn’t that big a fall, and I’d previously fractured that shoulder years ago, so had the fear I’d re-fractured it. But it’s better today and I’m hoping it’s better tomorrow.

  • No seats in the shade, no problem. Aka “tell me you’re old without telling me you’re old”.

Coffee shop know me so well by now they just use my board as a table.

On the way back hit some gravel on a residential street and ghosted the board. Managed to skid my feet as I fell back and stay upright, but the fear as it rolled at speed toward the parked cars was intense.

Fortunately it fakie’d and rolled left at the end. No harm, just moments of dread.

  • Last few days I’ve nibbled some more at the Level, dropped-in at Shoreham, rolled the mellow bowl at Hampden Park.

Shoreham: I’d totally forgotten how difficult the combi-bowl seems when you’ve been dropping-in on regular coping’d stuff. Can’t believe I used to do it without much of a thought. A few sketchy moments of back wheels skidding (killing all speed) but I need to get back there and do it more regularly otherwise it will be another ten years and I’ll be 70.

There is SO much good crete in East Sussex these days…

  • Got a new deck as a birthday present today.

Such a short wheelbase compared to the Mindless decks, that within 20 minutes my pivot turns were nearly 180. So nippy.

Decided to try a hobo walk. Unfortunately my camera person didn’t catch any of the faster or longer walks.

Ps. now packing a retractable broom and dustpan on all trips.

  • Good work 👍

    And happy birthday!

  • Ok going to add those to bag

    Happy Birthday!

  • Thanks!

By the way, if you don't follow gouache_darn_it on insta, you're missing out

Definitely a thing for anywhere urban

  • Back at it after 18 years. Crazy how muscle memory works. Almost back to where i left off. Well, except i'm just as stiff as a board myself these days. So much fun though.

  • Yeah he’s my spirit guide

  • Which retractable broom do you have? Thinking of buying one for Brixton skate park and attaching it to the railings by the seated area!
