I didn't know about RWGPS (I guess having only used GPSies so far) but that seems to have done the trick. I am a happy man : )

Really? I spend most of my life in it and @skinny was/is one of their ambastardors
Accept no substitutes!
You can normally export KML files from Google which could also then be converted to GPX tracks using RWGPS or GPSies or something.
