Pretty sure there's a behind the bastards episode about him and they explained about his parents; dad was an African American chess master. Parents split up when he was 11 or 12 and his mum took him back to Luton. Genuine surprise was he has a sister who is a lawyer in the US whom, no surprise, he and his brother are not close to.
