The chap that does our carpets will talk about underlay for hours. I mean hours! It’s all about the deflection and rebound, not about the thickness. I’ll admit I switched off after 2mins, but the stuff he used hasn’t lost its cush in 5 years.
My advice is find a fitter first and tell them what you are after. We got the same carpet with good underlay fitted for the same price as just the carpet from the same carpet supplier he used.
Worth noting a bedroom is a fairly low traffic area, so you dont necessarily need a premium carpet. The elements that make them feel nice underfoot relate to other factors. Although if it's only one bedroom then it doesn't matter that much.
One thing I would say is to get the best underlay you can. We cheaped out which was a big mistake. You want that stuff that looks like it was designed for mental patients in the GDR.
