He's a special case in that a) he had a back injury that nearly ended his career and is managing that still b) he's doing 15 CX races every winter and c) with his results he has a lot more leeway in choosing his race program.

Jill Douglas on the BBC reported that she was stood next to the French TV crew who interviewed him afterwards and he said it was a racing incident, nothing more. Apparently he said the same in a press conference the medallists had after the ceremony, but I've not seen any links to that.
