There is something really awful about Garmin land. The reek of #midlife and gainzz.

I bought a 255s two months ago. It's fairly crap at being a watch but very good at being a node for Strava and Intervals.. validate gainzzzz.

Tl/Dr a tool for self hate

I loved my Forerunner 910XT despite its quirks. But that was because I used it purely for training and tracking. It was years ago, mind. Right now I’m just happy if I can get out of bed on time.

I would refuse to buy it purely based on the bezel being off by one click in the advert.

Has a bit of the fun vibe with lugless case, but hard to find.

Now I have even more rage they didn’t just tweak it.

try a Garmin watch

You can find great value Garmin watches second hand. I got a Forerunner 245 for next to nothing. As for your question about older models for the sake of aesthetics, I reckon you'd want something relatively recent so that you won't have issues syncing with your phone, headphones, HR strap and so on.

Take a look at Coros too. Way better value for money imo. I love my Pace so much. Tiny, incredibly light, battery life is craaaaazy good.

I was set on measuring gainzz and aimzz on the above coked up Coros but got a deep discount on da Garmin (which is usefully smaller). I actually ordered a Coros and returned it due to the shame of fat dad trackezz.. currently wearing a G shock on hols from all that striving..
