  • The mole grips won't help in this situation. The problem is that there's a section of the stem that the bolt needs to pass through that completely hides the bolt so there's nothing to hold on to.

That’s annoying. I take it by you saying it won’t go past a certain point there’s a bit of the bolt shoulder still on the other end.

  • I don't think so, it snapped right in the middle, well below the shoulder. I can't really see what's stopping it from coming the whole way out. Maybe I need to try a tiny bit more force.

  • Does anyone know anyone who hires coaches/minibuses? Sport club, needs to transport 25-30 people (mainly kids <18 and a few responsible parents/coaches).

  • Automatic centre punch.
Punch a dent close to the circumference of the protruding stud.
Punch it several more times to give the dent some depth.
Then use the punch tangentially in the dent to rotate the stud.
I've never known this method to fail.

  • I can't really see what's stopping it from coming the whole way out

There might be a plain section of shank between the shoulder and the thread, but more likely it's not coming out because it has a curve in it.

  • I've never known this method to fail.

The you have led a blessed life. That method might be necessary on a blind hole with a fastener snapped off flush, but here we have something which can be slotted and wound out the way it came in with a screwdriver.

  • Good point, that could well be it.

  • What is this area behind the windscreen of a car / bus commonly called in english?
I always thought it's the / it's part of the "dashboard" (but now realize the dashboard is rather where all the instruments are that are facing the driver).

Google suggests "cowl" or "cowling", but I feel that is a very technical term?

  • That’s also the dashboard IMO or the dash top. All a bit Americanised. Cowling would be the intakes for the radiator edit: engine cooling or, depending on the vehicle, those external vents.

  • if we use the lyrics to Clutch's cult classic, 'Spacegrass', it's definitely the dashboard even for americans. unless they blutacked jesus perpendicular to gravity.

  • Spacegrass

    Absolute banger.

  • Bike shop is quoting to swap my Ultegra SL 6600 derailleur with a Tiagra 4700 GS after some minor crash damage, as well as swapping the STI for Tiagra ST-4700.
Do I take it or do I go hunting for some SL 6600 to keep it the same?

  • Vestigial coaming.

  • Tiagra are cheaper build quality but matching looks good in my mind.

    Are you alright?

  • Yeah I'm fine, got side-swiped by a Just Eat rider at low speed. More annoying than anything else tbh.

Repair bill is coming to about £800!

  • Thanks @Jonny69 & @jackbepablo ✌️

  • That is the dash board, where the instruments are is the binnacle or instrument cluster.

  • In case anyone was wondering -

Originally, the word dashboard applied to a barrier of wood or leather fixed at the front of a horse-drawn carriage or sleigh to protect the driver from mud or other debris "dashed up" (thrown up) by the horses' hooves.[1]
The first known use of the term (hyphenated as dash-board, and applied to sleighs) dates from 1847.[2] Commonly these boards did not perform any additional function other than providing a convenient handhold for ascending into the driver's seat, or a small clip with which to secure the reins when not in use.
When the first "horseless carriages" were constructed in the late 19th century, with engines mounted beneath the driver such as the Daimler Stahlradwagen, the simple dashboard was retained to protect occupants from debris thrown up by the cars' front wheels. However, as car design evolved to position the motor in front of the driver, the dashboard became a panel that protected vehicle occupants from the heat and oil of the engine.
With gradually increasing mechanical complexity, this panel formed a convenient location for the placement of gauges and minor controls, and from this evolved the modern instrument panel, although retaining its archaic common name.

..google-image-searching this gives me results that look like steampunk Daleks 💁

  • Try "gauge binnacle", that gets you results in the automotive region which resemble instrument panels🙂

  • Thanks for this, can now access a couple of sites I never could before

  • Does anyone recognise this man? Possibly a sports person from late 90s or so?
