I was under the impression that creators get more money from a premium subscriber watch than from ads. The portion of your subscription fees that goes to creators is split proportionally between the videos you actually watch, so at least I feel like it is more directly supporting those creators.
Previously I had been using ad-blocker and using Patreon for a few people but that just got way to laborious to keep track of.
One of YouTube's biggest stars, David Dobrik, said in an interview that he earned about $2,000 a month from YouTube directly, despite his weekly videos gaining an average 10 million views.
