  • Nice. Pondering ditching my XA for the XA2 as it's just so easy to use.

  • Nice shots! My favourites are the bikes and the flags one 👍

  • Kodak Portra 400 (SMC Pentax 30mm)

  • Got a couple of rolls developed at Ag-photo. Posted yesterday, wetransfer link with images this afternoon.
Particularly pleased with the TMax roll - shot on an EOS 30 with 50mm

  • ^those are great

  • Yeah, some cool shots, and quality looks very good as well 👍

I don't do black and white at home any more as it wouldn't make sense (only shoot like 4 rolls of b&w a year these days as I just love colour a lot more) - and getting black and white developed and scanned here now is either super expensive (but good), or not expensive (but shit) 🙃

  • ..are there any interesting (and active) online photo communities left these days?
Not necessarily analog-specific, although that would probably be more worthwhile for me..

I notice flickr is a lot more active again now, and there's some talented folk on there and interesting work to be seen, yet not much of a "community" any more, in the sense that people share thoughts about each other's work - that's mostly "likes" now and super standard comments ("great shot").

Looked at tumblr the other day (which I really enjoyed as well back in the day), but this doesn't seem very active now.

Also seen some good stuff on Lomography, although I'm not a huge fan of the whole approach to be honest (there's quite a bit of stuff shot with all sorts of equipment on there though, not only lo-fi / Lomo shots) - yet hardly any worthwhile interaction between people as well it seems.

Anybody know of any platforms I've missed maybe?

Also looked at some forums but that wasn't fruitful at all, seemed to be technical discussions and quite lukewarm photography for the most part 💁

  • Reddit? Lots of edgy nudes though.

  • © Li Hui - https://www.huiuh.com

..also leaving this here - this is somebody I followed on tumblr way back when, seeing how she has progressed in the past years is mindblowing, looking at her website (link above - need to browse from desktop with some time on your hands ideally) literally left me sitting there with my mouth open yesterday.
    Lovely stuff.

Which artists are inspring you these days?

  • @umop3pisdn - I don't mind edgy nudes, but reddit confuses me to be frank due to the mass of different subreddits for the same topic, also (while there's some great and knowledgeable people on there) there's also a ton of chatter one has to wade through, I literally do not have time for that 😅

@amey - to be honest I don't even know / get what "Discord" is exactly, let alone how it works.
I use that every couple of weeks for one online community (not related to photography) that sent me an invite to their "server", and apart from that I'm struggling to even use / browse this - guess I'm too old for it 🙃

  • I really miss using Flickr on desktop as a main source of looking at photos. Things have become so dumbed-down (that’s probably not a great turn of phrase) now.

It does seem to be going through a bit of a resurgence but phones aren’t going anywhere.
I wonder how Flickr could get more thoughtful engagement? You could also use something like Medium as a blog platform that links to it but means putting the time in for all that stuff.

Have also been thinking about this a lot lately…

  • I feel stupid as I don’t know how to work discord. Honestly bring back forums

  • It's always been a desktop-only thing for me - and (coming back to it after a hiatus of a couple years) I find it pretty much stayed the same - both a good and a bad thing I guess 💁

It's a good platform to follow people's streams I think or dive deeper into their albums etc. - also searching via tags etc. I often find useful.
The whole interface is a bit dated maybe, but actually still works well - you can browse stuff fullscreen-ish in good quality (flickr doesn't reduce filesize if the user uploads big versions), which is a big plus.

I wonder how Flickr could get more thoughtful engagement?

Well, it's down to the users I guess? The functionality is there (even though their "messages" interface is pretty crap), but mentioning and commenting etc. works fine - maybe it's just the user's fault if they don't take the time to engage.. maybe these times are just over, with attention spans going down and people are hardly able to drop a quick like, I don't know..

  • Matt Black made a very nice medium article a few years ago. I stopped using medium since the subscription so not sure if it’s that popular with photographers.

  • Her work looks amazing.
I find youtube really inspiring at the moment.
These two blogs stood out for me recently of photogs past and present:

  • I should also say an old friend of mine has really inspired me recently.
Fabrizio has just made his first film after years of photography.
It’s not available to view publicly yet because he’s trying to get it into film festivals.
    But it’s beautiful.
Some stills are on his IG
