  • Did a hilly 40 miles on Friday. Got some lovely sunshine in. Rode some paths and roads that I have not ridden previously: Headstone Tunnel / Viaduct, some apparently unnamed road out of Monsal Dale up towards Wardlow. Had a chip butty in Hathersage at about mile 30, at which point I was feeling fresh as fuck, sitting there thinking to myself "You know, you're a lot fitter than you give yourself credit for, you should stop beating yourself up for being out of shape". 5 miles and 1100 feet of climbing later I was at the top of Stanage feeling absolutely fuckered and extremely glad that it was pretty much all downhill to get me home.

  • That climb out of hathersage must be brutal. Been up in the car, wouldn’t fancy it on the bike!

  • Which route out? The Sheffield Road way? I've never done that climb as it's full of traffic and there is no way I am suffering my way up that steep bastard whilst also being treated to a thousand close passes. Maybe I'll try it on a quiet evening one day.

I normally prefer to get back from Hathersage by going up Coggers. It adds a couple of miles and an extra 200 feet versus going via the Dale, but it seems psychologically easier as you do get the opportunity for the occasional breather. Whichever way you decide to go it's pretty savage though.
