  • V60 is ok faff wise...but if you just dump the coffee and water in it's going to be shit. Gotta rinse paper, gentle pour, swirl etc. Plus like you say, need scales

In theory yes, in reality these days I use a drip assist

Wash the paper, add the ground coffee, do a quick bloom, them put this on top and fill with water, top up once and wait. No faffing. And you need scales for an aeropress just as much as you do a v60.

  • If my girlfriend gave me a pretty Bialetti I would be very wary about using something uglier to save a tiny bit of faff.

  • And you need scales for an aeropress just as much as you do a v60.

Hard disagree if you're using pre-ground coffee (as I assume no faff OP is). My coffee scoop which is labelled "7 grams" does hold about 7 grams of ground coffee when level. Two of those without concentrating too much on levelness, but not piled high will be close enough to 15g as makes no difference.

Inverted, my aeropress will hold about 250ml of water along with the grounds, provided the plunger is not pushed too far in.

My work colleagues already think i'm a coffee nerd by just having an aeropress at work and the open plan kitchen precludes a noisy hand grinder. I think scales would result in my getting a permanent coffee based nickname. (I'm actually currently using a V60 size 1 with a hario air kettle for measuring water volume - as it's not possible to guestimate doing a slow pour in a V60 which is simultaneously draining)

Sure if you want to do fancy recipes with less water or want to grind by dose, you should get some scales...but for starters with a no faff requirement, certainly not needed.

but how do you know that

  • used my scales at home

  • Hoffman to the rescue: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Umb2lhcxHHU

This video basically shows that if you're not thinking about it, "a scoop of coffee" can mean anything...but if you are concentrating, and you scoop the same amount every time (not difficult) you will get repeatable results.

Not all scoops are equal, and I think smaller scoops are easier to get consistent (hence my 7g one scooping 7g). The actual aeropress one is in my opinion too big. The small 7g one also fits in my tupperware for pre ground coffee (I grind my own at home and bring enough in for the next few days - it's fine).

  • You also don't need scales to work out how much coffee you need - just trial an error for what tastes right. Once you make a tasty cup - just do the same thing next time. Everything else is just numbers - it's repeatability that is important.

  • I bought it 2nd hand and the mesh basket wasn’t included. I’m using the filtropa paper filters so I’d assume they are smaller than the flat bottom ones.

Hopefully ordering the thermal carafe this weekend if there are any in stock

  • I’m a scales and timer and in-line water filter guy, but the OP said he found cafetière a faff. I reckon the last few pages of suggestions are enough to put him back onto instant.
I believe cafetière is the closest you can get to chucking coffee and water together and getting an ok coffee.

  • The irony is not lost on me, however everytime I have to use a cafetiere, the wash up is the faff I do not need in my life. Also, if you don't stir after some steeping, the crust messes up the plunge...so I'm partially with the op on 'cafetiere = faff'. I will die on the hill of aeropress is least faff.

  • Ah, got you! Yeah, I wouldn't do more than 90g in the paper filter. Have you managed to use it yet or are you waiting on the carafe?

  • I'm lazy as fuck and don't find a V60 much of a faff. I'm a bit more meticulous these days but a few years ago I just used to chuck what looked like the right amount of pre ground coffee from a supermarket in a V60 and dumped a load of water on it and that was a huge improvement on instant.

I have 2 and I don't think I've bought either, got them both for free with a bag of coffee. You're welcome to borrow one if you fancy!

i agree with this for one cup, but for multi cups, not so much.

which is why i'm thinking of buying a filter machine.

  • Wowsers, thanks for all the detailed replies everyone, loads of good stuff here.

Essentially i'm trying to move a lot of my evening routine such as gym/training into a pre work routine but with other stuff i'm struggling on time and energy. I've only really recently discovered nice coffee is nice so any help on making it easier it very welcome.

  • Agreed. V60 and clever dripper are dodgy on capacity for two mugs of filter as well.

Is a chemex or anything else better for a proper two /three mug pour over? Ive already got an espresso machine and two grinders so really dont need another appliance in the coffee corner.

  • If you decide to let the gaggia go please let me know. I have a broken gaggia classic here and may be able to use your machine to get it going, or get one good machine from two not-so-good machines! Happy to pay/make a forum donation etc.

As someone who is both really quite lazy and drinks a lot of coffee, the Sage precision brewer has been the one. Picked up a barely used one for very little. You can set it up the night before, if that helps with the morning routine.

... But I'd just start with using that Bialetti.

Agree on this, trying to properly clean the mesh is probably the worst bit of coffee cleanup of any method IMO. Clever Dripper beats it in that regard. V60 isn't much more effort I'd say.

  • Chemex have more capacity - especially the large one. Also tastes different due to thicker papers.

  • For the folks looking for interesting espresso from JG this is a good one; https://jamesgourmetcoffee.com/product/honduras-finca-cascaritas-sauvignon-blanc/

I've run it on a 'normal' 30 seconds and a longer extraction up to 45 seconds as a flat white. Think longer is better tbh

  • Ta, sounds up my street. Got some ordered, hopefully will arrive before my Dark Arts runs out.

  • I accidentally ordered a Shades Of Coffee OPV spring mod kit before realising my Gaggia doesn't need it. Anyone interested in it for the price of a forum donation?

  • The outrageous production level of this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IkssYHTSpH4
